This boat looks very lovely and it would be good to know more about it George. What is the design, how was she built and how is she powered? Please tell us more.

Did not use any plans for this model. Scratchbuilt after photos and pics from internet and books. I tried to build a "symphony" of this kind of ships. Lenght is about 70 cm. Scale 1:45. The crew are former soldiers, scale 1:48, they have a better life nowsmiley!

There is a brushed motor from Robbe and a homemade gearbox in the engine room. The power comes from a 1800 Ah 2 cells (7,4 V) lipo acc .The hull is planked with 2 x 5 mm jelutong (lime is better) stripes at plywood ribs. Epoxiglued.

Of course it would have been better to build her bigger and with a real steam engine, but there are so many other ships to build before the workshop are closed down.face 21

There are some more pics from the building in the album.

Thanks for the info Georg- a very pretty model and clever stuff building from scratch and photos, I do like your other sailing boats too. I'm sure other members would be interested to know about your methods. I've enjoyed your photos.

The Excalibur is based on plans of an american schooner, but I changed the lines of the bow and stern a little in a more "scandinavian" look. The Dalwhinnie is based on Harold Underhills plans of the Brixham Trawler Valerian. GA (and the name) are changed, because she is not fishing – she is smuggling whiskey instead!

Both sailing boats are handling with 4 servos each. 1 servo for the rudder and the sails are divided in 3 sections with 1 servo each. In that way they are much easier to handle and you could sail them more like the real boats.

For the moment I am building a three-mast schooner, William Ashburner, after plans from Harold Underhill. Scale 1:45. There will be 5 servos to sail her. As the other sailing ships, the hull and sail area will be to scale and no extra keel or enlarged rudder.

And Ian – I looked at your albums, I am really impressed by the finish of your boats, I really can´t reach that level. Does not have the patience! When i have ca 25 % left of a model to build, most of my mind is in the next project.

Georg, I think your models have great flair and presence. They really appeal to the imagination- your Glenmorangie leaped out at me- my favourite whisky too! And yes, I know what you mean about the next model.

I find it quite hard to drive on and finish things sometimes, and there can be quite long gaps between finishing a hull, which is the bit I like, and getting the whole model finished off. I usually get there, but it can be years!

My river police launch, Dunlin, is an Underhill design- very nice drawings.

                  Regards,

                  Ian
