on the stern there is a channel for thr prop shaft. but it looks as if i will have to cut out a section to fit the cort nozzle.need advice to seal it back up and make it waterproof , thinking of using p 40 or resin and fibre glass . i have not used plastic hulls before so i am at a loss of where to start. how do i strenghten it. what do i make the bulkheads out of , ply or plasty card . would it be easier to fit a rudder instead of a cort nozzle . can anyone out there help ?

Tuts. I have not used a plastic hull before so will refrain from doling out advice on that front, but

on the rudder or kort front, they are two different animals, and if it is a tug you are making, I would persevere with the kort nozzle, Korts give much better thrust and control. BUT a rudder is much easier to fit, and depends really on the amount of control you want and how accurate a model you might want to build

We also need a description of what you are building and where the hull came from….pictures??

                Hi Tuts,

What plastic is the hull made of? Vacuformed ABS perhaps?

If it is then best adheives are Plastic Epoxy or a mixture of Methyl Ethyl ketone (MEK) and Acetone. Also the good old balas cement glues – the nitrocellulose type – like Durofix (Can one still get this?) or UHU. I have used ABS plastic sheet for other (non-boat) modelling purposes and found that epoxy glass layups will adhere OK providing the ABS is well scuffed and clean (I find polyester glass layups to be too brittle). The epoxy I use is called "Ampreg 22", quite expensive but excellent stuff – don't know if this is only a South African product!

You should be able to get ABS plastic sheet for bulkheads.

                Good luck,

                Robin

Oops – forgot to mention – good cyanoacrylates are also good adhesives for ABS. Remember, you don't 'glue' ABS, you chemically 'weld' it and so to get a really good bond you need to 'graunch' the two pieces together (gently of course) rather than just place them together.

hi everyone thanks for the advice regarding setting prop shaft . in the end i cut out a small square for the prop shaft and rudder , i then fixed them in place using some p 40 and plasti card , then sealed it with fibre glass resin tilting the hull up at an angle so the resin covered the prop shaft and rudder tube . result a very nice weld . i stenthend the hull using 1/4 inch balsa strip round the lip of the hull and 1/2 inch balsa as beams then i laid the deck using plasticard , result .

                    cheers Tuts
