Hello, hope this is OK to ask here but I volunteer for a small museum in London and we have a model yacht that has knotty rigging and might be missing a little sail. We are a tiny team of volunteers and none of us have any expertise with model boats. Might anyone be able to help us fix this? Either popping in if you're local or talking me through a repair online? Many thanks

          Hi Lettice,

Where is your museum located in London ? If you could post a picture of the yacht we may have a better idea of what requires to be done to put it back together.

I get up to London on business occasionally maybe I could look in at some time to advise.

          Regards Ray

            Hi Ray,

We are near Goodge Street Station and would appreciate any help or advice you could share.

It's not in the worst condition but we think the ropes have just been wound around to keep them out of the way, rather than being attached in the correct position.

Hi Lettice. There’s not too much wrong by the looks of things. I am not a yacht man, but I reckon Ray could tidy that up easy, eh Ray?. (No pressure)

                  Hi Lettice,

From your photos, the boat would appear to be what is known as a Gaff Sloop Rig and so it is unlikely there would have been a small sail between the upper part of mast and the gaff yard supporting the mainsail. If you Google it you will see lots of images.

As Ashley says, it looks to be pretty much all there and just needs some setting up.

Does the model have an interesting history?

                  Colin

Thanks all. Unfortunately we don't have any history or background about it. We have guessed mid 20th c or later.
