Hi Guys, The TSB "James Piper" has "Coffee grinder" winches for the leaboards. How do they work and where are they fitted on deck ? Many thanks. Regards, Geoff.

The leeboard winches are positioned just behind the main horse, plenty of other barge photos in my album

Hi. Geoff, I new that I had seen reference to the type of winch that you call a coffee grinder, but i couldn't remember where, anyway I found it last night in my bedside reading pile!

Its in Thames Sailing Barges by Kent and Freeston,It is described as 'twin vertical drums on a common shaft driven by bevel gears at the top, all nicely enclosed to stop them snagging loose falls of rope or the like'.I have quoted it from the book as I am not familiar with the winch, although it mentions that they were fitted to Ironsides that is based at Famersham in Kent.

            I hope this helps.

            Eddie.

You mention "Ironsides" in your post. How many members have made a model of "Ironsides" ? Have you photos of this barge that shows a coffee grinder winch? Kind regards, Geoff.

Hi. Geoff, I don't have a photo of Ironsides but there are a couple in my album, Ardent and other boats, of Lady of the Lea,and for some reason I can't upload them to this thread at the moment, they show what looks like a modern electric winch, but it does show the position of them, the same place that Ray's photos show.

From the description in my earlier post I would think it is hand operated by a handle on a horizontal shaft at the top of the winch driving the bevel gears that turn the two drums.

                  Regards Eddie.

Thanks very much Eddie, It sounds like the modern racing yacht type snubbing winches . Thanks for that, now we know. Regards Geoff.

Success! have loaded the photos onto my pond yacht album than into this post. Is there a limit on the number of photos that can be accessed from an album?
