I have a Clarke Bench mounted drill. It is probably about 18 years old. The chuck seems to be starting to wear. I am thinking about buying a new chuck but can’t remember how to get the old one off the drill.

Does anyone know how to do it?

        Tim,

Picture would be good to give sound advice but in its absence, extend the quill and look to see if there is a slot in it.  If there is,  a taper wedge (a Morse key) tapped into the slot will release the Morse arbour and the chuck.  The chuck is then tapped off the Morse arbour.  After 18 years it could be very tight and some care is needed to avoid knocking the job out of true.  Consider using a heat gun to warm the job up.  It will help.

          Thanks Len

          I’ll have a look tomorrow.

I’ve just had a look at a Clarke bench mounted drill press and had a browse through the instructions.  Unfortunately, as seems to be the case with a lot of hobby drill press units the morse fitting is internal in the chuck and the end of the spindle is tapered.   This is a bit of a pain as you don’t have the convenience of a slot to tap the chuck out as Len describes above.  If yours is this type of fitting you have to put some sort of metal spacer between the top face of the chuck and bang the chuck upwards against the spacer and the underside face of the head.  Hopefully that will split the taper.  As Len suggests, heat might help as well.

This is just a typical example of the arrangement:

That looks like my bench drill.

I will have a go at removing it later.

              Thanks

Managed to get the chuck off this afternoon but the spindle (?) was still in. Do I need to remove this as well?

The new chuck should have a matching socket in it so it should just tap into the end of the spindle.  You need a chuck with a female taper.
