Glen Rosa is now essentially complete, bar a few human figures and some steps up to the bridge. My work doesn’t give me much spare time, but I have managed this build in about 15 months. After trimming ballast in the bath again, it’s sea trials on the pond. Any reader in the Edinburgh area who wishes to join me is very welcome. I have waders, but am hoping they will not be required!

Always worth tying a long piece of string to a model for the first time on the water.  I certainly recommend it for steam powered models.  Even if you have waders on you can recover it a lot quicker with some string.  The danger is, of course, not letting it get tangled in the prop or the paddles in your case!  After a few minutes if you’re happy with the way it handles take the string off and run it up and down close to the bank to start with.  Then go for it.

Lovely model Alasdair. Good luck with the sea trials.

I like Richards suggestion of a piece of string, but if you have waders you should be ok.

            Sure you won’t need them.

            Jim.

The idea of a removable keel seems to have resolved ballasting issues, at least when going ahead, though she is still not keen at all on going astern! very pleased with the results though.

Looks great Alasdair, really captures the charm of the prototype. How deep is the removable keel?

Thanks for the kind remarks! Will post a photo of removable keel – though please don’t laugh at it.  I suspened an 8cm bolt with a 15cm plastic tube full of lead shot sitting lengthwise on the end of it  Realised that was not deep enough though and so glued some lead flashing to hang a further 10cm further down. If this was not so experimental it would be more elegant than that.

Also , on matters IT, am afraid I have again spent a couple of hours trying to get logged on to the website this evening.  Either I am doing something badly wrong or there is something wrong with my account! Grateful for any help please, as I have tried using several browsers but site only seems to let me on once in a blue moon! Nt having problems gettig into any other site. Which is a shame, as I really enjoy the forum!

Returning to ballasting, I found that when the boat goes ahead she is very, very stable, even when steering. When she stops though, she is prone to heel a wee bit in the breeze.  What she really, really does not like doing though is going astern, even slowly. This always makes her list – sometimes to port sometimes starboard. It may be that if I had a remvable keel that was deeper or longer I would not not have this problem, but for the moment will stick with what I have invented!

not sure if the above film clip is openable but shows her on the pond last night.

The video worked for me.  Really looks good on the water. Your weight additions might not be elegant, but they work!

Regarding logging in. I don’t log out when leaving the forum. All I do is check each time that  log out is still visible in the blue band. I’ve found that the posting section is then still working. Now and again I’m told to log in, so do so, and log out re appears in the blue bar and I carry on.

Whether I’m doing things correctly or not, I’m not sure but it seems to work for me.

Alasdair, the video worked well for me also.  The only problem was it wasn’t long enough!  It’s so good to actually see a model on the water and it looks excellent.  Very well done.  I don’t think the fish will mind what the keel looks like. 🙂

Every so often I have the log-in problem.  The official advice is to clear your computer casch and cookie files and try again.  Tried it once.  Never again.  It ruined the connectivity to no end of other sites and took days to fix.  It’s caused a few people to jump ship or take shore leave.  Saluting the flag at the moment but the problem does need fixing.

Anyway, would welcome any views on ballasting. As I say, the home knitted fake keel I have made seems to make a huge difference and have no problems going ahead, but it does not overcome the problems there are going astern. Does the keel need to be longer perhaps, to overcome that?
