Just been away for a few days holiday, meanwhile some of the hardware has arrived from Fleabay, the two motors and their speed controllers to be exact.

So now all I have to do is find someplace to actually build the thing!

Her Indoors having put her foot down about my using the chest freezer lid as I did last time. So before I start it looks like I will have to build a bench someplace.laugh

Try using a piece of offcut kitchen worktop, its good and strong but can be moved about.

As above. I have a bit sat on a workmate and that`s what I use. Worktop is great stuff.

Paul. As you know, the pay for an MB article is so GENEROUS I can afford to have all the best stuff.

When I say worktop, of course I mean Italian Marble, not that cheap chipboard stuff.

Thank you for those ideas gentlemen. I now can please Her Indoors, and also have something properly substantial to work on that can still be put away when its not in use.

I am looking at motive power for the bait boat, which is 800mm long and sits low in the water. What does the readership think about Decaperm motors?

Expensive, is the decaperm the big fat one or the 500 sized one?

wont an ordinary 540 do?? or one of the 2.5;1 geared ones they do (MFA)

Agree 110% with Ashley – and that's if you can actually obtain one. The MFA geared ones are noisy but cheap and readily available. They also come with an integral mounting plate and one suppressor capacitor (but they really need the other two).

Alternatively Component Shop/ACTion are shortly to import some 755 motors which are almost direct replacements for the old Speed 720 Torque – but a lot cheaper as they have plain bearings. Something like that with direct drive to the prop might be worth investigating. I've tested one on 12v and got 4250 RPM with no load and a current of just 420mA. Torque? I gave up trying to stop it with the usual rag-in-fingers technique.

                              Just a couple of thoughts………..

Ref 540 on straight drive – forget it. Not enough guts without gearing.

Semi displacement hull based upon TID profile, all up weight approx. 6kilos, I propose to use a 50 – 60mm dia four blade prop, do you think that an ungeared 775 would be upto the task.

Should be, on 12v or more, but might be marginal on the bigger prop.

Possible option to gain the extra thrust is to use a 50dia 5 blade

The guy wants the best "build it up to top quality not down to a price" were the words he used. I agree that £17 for a prop is expensive but if the 5 blade provides the best performance…………so be it.

Hence the question about the Decaperm motors.

Decaperms used to be the best some years ago but they are very noisy and vastly over-priced c/w other motors around these days. The best now would be something like one of the Buhler motors but I've no knowledge of their range. Brushless motors reputedly have poor low-speed capabilities unless you buy the type with sensors and a very good speed controller. A 5-blade prop on a 755 would be much more cost-effective!

The bait boat is now designed but I am waiting for better weather to build the prototype as I don't fancy casting fibreglass in the cold.

I'm back on a bait boat design for a friend,

                                              The criteria is:

                                              8kg load capacity

                                              Stable in rough water

                                              Fast but with minimum splash

                                              Long running time

Room for Fish Finder, Depth sonar and cameras (plus all software and transmitters)

                                              Should be fun

                                                  Hi Andy

The last one worked out quite well but ended up being a little slow when fully loaded so with the lessons learned the new design will be fundamentally different,
