      Battery advice

Hi guys – got a question regarding bait boats and after some advice if at all possible.

I am attempting my first ever RC build (which just so happens to be a bait boat) and I have never attempted anything like this before. I have trawled the internet for many many days now and thought the quickest solution would be to simply ask those in the know!

My main design criteria for this is to have something that will last as long as possible i.e. many trips from the bank and back again. What would be a good starting point in terms of batteries?

I have assumed I will be using two (catamaran hull) so that they can act as ballast and will therefore design the rest of the boat around this – what would you recommend in terms of voltage, type, in series or parallel etc?

Any advice is welcomed and greatly appreciated.

        Thanks in advance.

As far as I know there are very few MB forum contributors on this very specialist subject, but "the other forum" has a whole board on the issue. Have a look here **LINK**

            Hello Aaron

This is a bait boat design that I have been working on.

            bait boat rear quarter.jpg

Its has twin hulls for stability and two large bait hoppers mounted lengthways in the centre of the hulls.

The propeller's are enclosed to prevent being clogged by weeds.

This cross section shows the general arrangement within the hulls.

The water intakes for the propeller's are protected by a mesh to prevent weeds from getting into the system.

The client who is a carp fisherman requested a high volume payload and the ability for a fast re-load and turn around so this design has an 18kilo load capacity and a pair of speedy high torque brushless motors.

The client also requested that space be included within the design to accommodate a fish finder and a downward pointing polarised live feed camera.

Hope this is of some help.

              Thank you for the replies.
Paul – what battery configuration are you opting for with this design?
My design criteria is very similar, apart from the bait capacity! That is a hell of a lot of bait.

                Hello Aaron

This particular variant will be using two packs of NiCad C cells, but there is sufficient inboard space to accommodate a couple of large lead/acid batteries so the boat could stay out all day.

The chap that I designed it for is one of these champion carp fishermen and was adamant that the payload had to be a minimum of 15kg and that the boat would work on a windy and choppy lake, hence the larger than usual and stable twin hull design.

The boat has been designed for the prevailing conditions at Sale Water Park.

The client also asked for an optional spinning bait dispenser that could be fitted over the hoppers and for a triple rig release mechanism that can be mounted on the stern.

                I hope this helps you.

                Paul

                  Hi Paul,

Once again Thank you for the help. Just one more question, what voltage and ah rating? Also would it be best to put these in series or parallel from a running time point of view?

This Probably isn’t the best way to start a design but my main criteria is to maximise time in the lake so would rather get this right and design the rest around the batteries.

                    Hi Aaron

I would opt for a couple of sealed lead acid 12ah batteries linked in parallel, these are the most cost / weight effective option.

I would opt for a pair of MFA 800 motors, these motors are a little amp heavy at 5ah but its a big boat and needs the oomph

If you want to advertise in Model Boats I suggest you do what any reputable trader would do and pay for it. I don't know what anyone else thinks but I would be very wary of buying anything from a cheapskate who won't abide by simple rules. At £1319 for the cheapest boat you're not exactly paring the margins to the bone, are you?

Paul. Its a wonder the client isn't IN the boat you are designing, its so big and jam packed with STUFF.

Aaron. I am sure the X plans do a bait boat (via myhobby store) …presumably this has stood the test of time for a basic bait boat . Pauls bait boat is a deluxe model. What do you want yours for?? Just motoring out and dumping one or two loads of ground bait and retreating?

Then of course, there's always this one – I like the use of the coloured balls to tell whether you're coming or going…

DG. Oooh I like that video. What a great boat design for the job. Yes, the ball thing is v clever. Ashley
