Short notice I know but our local auction house, Harper Field in Stroud has loads of live steam engines, of all sorts, Mamod, 5″Railway engine (estimate £20,000), steam traction engines and 2 boats, a Clyde Puffer & a drifter in lots between No.1500 & lot 1690 so being sold on Thursday this week. Might be of interest to some.

Interesting. The steam engines start on page 24:

Some of those estimates look very nominal.

I doubt very much they will stay at those estimates.  A lot of them are very firmly in the ‘collector’s’ markets.

Some very interesting old Airfix kits as well in bags for the collectors.

In case it is of interest to anyone, the Harper Field website now has the July auction closing bid prices for the lots.

To me, some of the prices seem very low although of course there will be buyers premium to add on. There are some, Bassett Lowke, Stuart Turner, that I recognise as ‘collectors items’ but even those don’t seem outrageous. The Clyde Puffer went for £75 & the drifter £100.

              Hi Stephen,

I think they are running out of collectors, If any normal person see’s what I have accumulated in the last 60 years they would have me sectioned straight away 🙂

I think there may only be 35 model boats up the loft ( scared to count really) !!

              Regards Ray

Interesting to see 5 Airfix liner kits go for £700. I have three of these (plus some more liners) but the value lies in the other two. The Southern Cross appeared around 1954/55 to mark the entry into service of the ship itself. My Dad bought one and made it for me. It ended up as a plaything in the bath where it was carefully sunk on many occasions. A beautiful ship and I have a metal 1:1250 version.

The other  is the ss France. This kit is a rare as hen’s teeth as the moulds have been lost.

I have the Airfix Canberra, looking around online it might be worth a bit – I will have to do some investigating!

It’s amazing how much some stuff is worth.

They did a boxed set of original style Thunderbirds and Captain scarlet die casts many years ago. Nice models just thecsame as the originals in very nice presentation boxes (flap, clear plastic inserts), and I bought one of each. Did not buy as an investment as for a start every collector I thought would buy one or two, but because I liked them.

Lo and behold they are worth three or four times what I paid for them now. Probably not a sound financial investment, however, 700 for a few Airfix kits….!  Ashley

Auction purchase for a telly program. Check this out…

I’m a bit gobsmacked. Wait until you get to the end. Very nicely restored, but…

This has been mentioned on Mayhem although I’d not looked at it until now. Shipwright Shop sell the kit for £258.

A very good example of why there is no money in second hand model boats!

I can understand the 750 labour cost, as the chap is or was acting as, a professional restorer. Not sure where the 550 came from for parts.

That they sold it for 750 I think reflects on the purchaser who simply wanted it as decoration for his business, in which case he was prepared to pay that much for the look of it (as it was never going to sail) and likely put it down as a business expense.

The other program where they take items from peoples sheds and refurbish/repurpose them oddly just the other day had a sea queen and they spent 100 on it, and it looked very nice…not FANTASTIC, but very nice, and quite a transformation from rhe ‘As found’ state, and sold for 150. The difference here being the labour cost was not included and they did it up solely with a view to make money.

Ultimately, if you add the cost of your time at..20? 30.? 40?. Pounds an hour then almost anything you could make would not return a profit, however its a hobby and you don’t do it for the money.

Some remuneration by mb for my articles is nice, but generally only covers the cost of materials and a new battery now and then. A free boat build essentially.

Speaking of articles, my list says I have had 38 in the mag so far!
