Hey all, New on here but not new to modelling. I have been out the game for some 12 years though.

Anyway I have my name down to get a Model Slipway Aziz tug when they are next available in mid November.

I had toyed with using the recommended geared motors, that was quickly chucked out for direct drive, 555 high torque motors (5050rpm @12v)

But the real question is, can I use 2x MFA Torpedo 800 motors instead? I already have these so it would just be ESC's to sort out. They rev to around 4300rpm @ 12v.

      Props are 50mm,

      Thanks in advance.

        Are they too big?

You can use anything you can cram in, but they are big motors to squeeze under that rear deck and unnecessarily powerful for the 50mm props.
If I were building another one I'd go with the 555 or low-speed 775 motors from Component Shop **LINK** on 12v and direct drive and an ACTion P94 speed controller. The geared Torpedo 500's are noisy.

            Thanks Dave,

            Much appreciate your feedback.

I think I will just go with the 555 motors and save these 800's for something else in the future.

Geared motors are out the question, I don't want the noise they produce.

The problem I had when building an Aziz was fixing the motors in place. Once the deck is fixed one set of fixings are difficult to access. I have cut away the deck seal above the screws to give a limited amount of access and that is with the gearboxes offset as per the instructions.

                Hi Tim,

                Thanks for your message.

For a minute there, I wasn't grasping what you meant but I guess you mean the motor mount screws to the motor 'tray' and not the actual motor to mount screws. Looking at a google picture I have found, I think I see what you mean.

I didn't realise until now how close the deck sits to the motors.

Yes the screws to fix the motor bracket. I think if I wanted to change the motors now, I would move the motors nearer to the centre line and use pulleys and toothed drive belts.

Also, independent control of the motors is very useful. Mine uses a Robbe Navy Twin stick but as Dave M suggests you could use an Action P94.

                    Hi Tim,

I should have the kit next week according to model slipway, they have one available so I don't need to wait until November now.

Yes i certainly do want independent control of the motors, I had looked at the twin stick but ideally i wanted to go 2.4ghz. To be totally honest I've yet to do some research and decide what route I'll go down.

I also plan on fitting a water pump and working fire monitor. led lighting might also be on the cards. it'll be the first boat I've had with a bow thruster though.

There are several different installation diagrams for Aziz on this website **LINK**

P94 can be used as twin independent ESCs for twin-stick control – so-called "Tank steering – or, with a simple change of an on-board DIL switch, either 50% or 100% motor/rudder mixing. It's not compatible with just one current Futaba set – the 6J – but works OK with all other radios we've tested it on. **LINK**

2G4 makes sense in just about every respect apart from submarines. My everyday sets are all Hitec.

Aziz has a low freeboard and openings at the side of the rear deck. This means that the large hatch MUST be held down securely to prevent ingress of water. The later model tug "Dutch Courage" has a system of tabs built into its similar design to achieve this – I'll see if I can find the drawing and post it on here so you can consider this modification to your Aziz. It's not complicated or expensive.

                          Dave,

Sorry for the delayed reply. I have now got my Aziz kit and so far have the stand built. I am waiting on motors and mounts to arrive early next week.

Thank you very much for the above information, I'll certainly consider the modification, it certainly seems simple enough.

I haven't made much progress with the kit so far, a delay in getting some parts has kept me back.

Anyway the propshaft and kort nozzles are installed and basically just needing some final touches and cleaning up to smooth off the epoxy.

I have realised that the position of the bow thruster on the drawing isn't going to be suitable for the bow thruster I have. I believe the one i have is around 150mm long so i will need to move the position forward a bit.

Now, when installing the thruster, should i put a little araldite or similar on the tubes before fitting them together?

                            many thanks

                            Stef
