Andy – I bought a boat last year which came with an Acoms Techniplus AP-202 2 channel 27 Mhz transmitter and I think a Hitec receiver.

I'm going to change to 2.4 Ghz so if the Acoms is any good to you, you can have it. Though I guess 2 channels isn't enough for your needs?

      Regards, Chris

Thanks for the thought Chris, but it needs 3 channels.

      Cheers

There are many 35Mhx sets about and some will work with 40Mhz crystals. May not be full range but I suspect most submarines are sailed at relatively close quarters so this may not be a problem.

I am not suggesting using on 35Mhx as this is reserved for model flight only.

I have just sold my 40 Mhz Futaba Skyleader 6 tx and rx to a submariner. It had not been used for some time and I could see no sense in keeping any longer. Hopefully it will enjoy a new lease of life in its new role.

          …..

Alas, the distance between ship and controller may be short, but punching radio waves through water is a whole different kettle of fish, and demands quite a bit of poke…

Andy , Have just noticed there is a 27mHz 4 channel pistol grip radio control transmitter and receiver in Sheffield ,South Yorkshire , on Gumtree for £25 which you may find of interest .

Is it actually possible to convert a 35mhz transmitter to 40mhz. I suspect it is not simply a matter of changing crystals.

              Cheers, Terry.

Some radios have a removable RF module which is like a brick which plugs into the back of the case. These are interchangeable between FM radios of the same manufacture. You will, however, need a different receiver dedicated to the new frequency.

It is not only possible, but fairly easy to retune a 35Mhz set to 40Mhz. Fairly easy technically (in most cases) for an electronics specialist who has access to tuning equipment and manuals.

If you do not have this, you will need to find such a person. And that could be hard…

Regarding transmitter conversion , as outlined earlier , it is possible to easily convert the Robbe 40mMhz F14 to 2.4Ghz by the simple addition of a small switchable module , part number P-FTM-TFH , which at £94.99 may seem expensive , but then it does in effect give you two transmitters in one , plus it is an authorised conversion .

Alas, we are considering the plight of the submariners, who need a low frequency set with at least 3 channels – ideally more. 27 and 40 Mhz sets of this type are in short supply, so a 35mhz conversion might be possible. But 2.4Ghz is no use to them as it does not go through water…

…………but there just might be a collection of people who have converted to 2G4 who now have redundant 40MHz transmitter modules, and possibly receivers to go with them.

I've just been given a used 40Mhz set to put in this sub model, when I build it. It's an eBay purchase – Hitec Ranger 3 Sky.

There's stuff out there, but with all used gear you take a chance on whether it works or not…
