After quite a while searching for plans for this class of ship on the internet, and after lengthy discussions at my club, i decided to try this from scratch with a bit of guess work.

I have gone for a semi-scale hull design at 1/150th which makes her about 90cm from bow to stern.

The bulkheads are made from 1/4 inch balsa and the hull from liteply, lots of wood glue and elastic bands are all that are needed!

With the upper part of the hull and superstructure added she is begining to look ok?
I’ve even had a go at the MH-68A which she carries!
Any feed back or suggestions or constructive criticism would be welcome.

Very good Gary, you certainly seem to have captured the shape of the hull and superstructure – not at all easy when you don’t have a set of plans.

            Thanks Colin,

I have come to a stage where i would normaly be fitting the running gear.

The Legend Class has two props/ two rudders, I am considering ( due to budget constraints) fitting one prop/ two rudders is this feasible? Will it affect the handling?

I cannot fit one rudder because of the "fan tail" design.

It's certainly not unheard of on full-size vessels – the salvage tugs 'John Ross' and 'Wolraad Woltemade' spring to mind – they had single screws (in Kort nozzles) with twin rudders and were extremely manoeuvrable. I guess they had to be given the nature of their work.

I think the only possible downside on one prop/two rudders is that neither rudder will be directly in the propwash for low speed control.

But..I have three battleships with the same problem (two props and one rudder in this case) and its not tooo much of a problem, however i have made the rudder extra long to impinge on propwash at full deflection. may be a bit difficult with yours..or just make the rudders a bit oversize..?

                Ashley.

                  Thanks Guys,

I guess its going to be trial and error!

This is the problem i have . You can see by this construction photo, there is a boat ramp at the stern and a rudder either side, therefore i cannot put a single rudder in the center.

Failing the one prop/ two rudder option i will just have to invest in two props as per the boat itself!

Hmm.. could cheat a bit and make the stern ramp a bit shorter than it should be and put the prop/rudder a bit further forward than it should be??

OR put a boat occupying the stern ramp in place, and use it as a cover for the single rudder tiller !!!

                              Hi Guys

                              SUCCESS!!!!

I have re-engineered the rear boat ramp to make room for a single tiller arm, the rudder is slightly further forward and the ramp is slightly steeper, but it is near enough.

Gary, You appear to be getting the hang of this scratch building lark.

Always remember it is the overall look you are aiming for. I suggest that the minutae can be "accomodating" for operational and time restraints, and no one will notice. Viz the rear ramp….the other thing to think of is access for future maintenance or damage..no good having stuff buried in the ship you cant get at , and rudders can take a bit of a knock.

Gary..stuck it in the water yet?? you decided on a one shaft arrangement eventually then?

Unless its a special, almost the last thing I do is take boats out for a run half finished, other than the usual bath test early on. Seeing it on the water and working just makes me think of the NEXT one, so I resist the temptation until the bitter end.

                                      Hi Ashley,

Yep i decided that the one shaft/ one rudder arrangement was the simplest and cheapest option, I am trying my best not to spend any money on this boat and so far the only things i have had to buy are cans of paint, everything else was lying about in the shed or have been made from scraps.

As far as the water test is concerned, I am of the same mind as yourself, if it goes down to the club pond on a sunday morning it has to be finnished first !!!

                                      Quick question…….

Would you suggest transfers for the "U.S. COAST GUARD" and penant numbers on the side?, or be really clever and make a template – spray them on?

                                      Gary

I my experience, it is very difficult to get a nice sharp image from a template and spray, especially on a smaller scale. It would be fiddly anyway to make the template.

It the hull is white, and you dont want to splash the cash, then you MAY get away with simply printing the appropriate lettering on white paper, trimming tightly and pasting this on the side, and varnishing the whole hull afterwards, so that the paper has the same gloss as the rest of the paint.

I dont know how much this "DIY" transfer paper is to buy? you just print your logo`s on to the stuff and cut it out and use it like a waterslide transfer (so I have read!!)

OR just use (Black?) sticky letters, easily available in print shops, or art shops, or even larger newsagents. Not expensive, couple of packs should do you for the duplicate letters.. not too large the letters are they?

                                          Hi Ashley,

I have got some of the "diy" transfer paper, left over from "HMS Manchester", I did the penant numbers for that project on transfers, but wasnt impressed with the results, the transfers still need varnishing over and if you use a water based varnish the transfers "bleed" making them look fuzzy, plus the paper is quite thick so you get a ridge. I spent ages messing with those to get them looking right!!!!

The transfer paper itself is also quite expensive, so overall not something i would asvise to anybody else.

I will try to find some black vinyl letters at the correct size (ish), but in the meantime i will experiment with templates.

                                            Hi Gary

I also used home made transfers on a model. I used a clear waterslide material from Craftycomputerpaper, at about £1.60 an A4 sheet not too expensive the 'paper' was printed on a inkjet printer the transfer cut out (not too carefully) then sprayed with a clear acrylic spray (couple of coats) when dry the paper was laid face up in a saucer of water until soaked (30 sec to 1 min) then the clear backed decal was slid off the backing into place on the model. when dried in place the whole thing was coated with clear varnish with no notisable bumps or ridges. 2years on the decal is still in place . Theonly problem I found is I can't print white on the transfer (no white ink)

                                            Cheers Tom

                                              Tom,

You are a life saver!, after reading your posting i couldnt understand why i had so many problems with my waterslide decals on HMS Manchester.

This is where i hold my hands up, it turns out i printed the decal paper upside down!, hence the backing paper was printed! Doh!

I just thought that the transfer was a bit thick, it turns out it was me!

All sorted now, i have followed your instructions for the decals on my USCGC and they look pretty good, i will post some photo's when i have applied them.
