Coming to the end of my Schnellboote project, now looking on to next build.

Managed to get a cheap Revell Gato Submarine kit, on a well known auction site recently.

I'm going to convert to R/C motorised, but only as a surface runner. I'm not brave enough to put it under.

Gregg, I have not seen what is involved with a surface running conversion of this boat but I would assume there is a fair amount of waterproofing to do, and by the time you have sorted this out, it may be possible to investigate the model being a dynamic diver…

It will rankle when every time someone sees it they will ask "doesitgounder?" and you will have to reply "no" and then it will be less of a submarine…mark my words!!

Personal view. Mine is not a fantastic diver, but does do what a submarine is supposed to .

Hi Ashley I know where you're coming from, however there are several obstacles to that.

            (1) The cost of the waterproof capsules/fittings.

            (2) I only use 2.4 radio gear. (no good under water)

            (3) No suitable pond in the area for going down under.

            (4) Limited time for modelling.

            (5) HIWMBO would have something to say, if I spent any more than I already have.

I live in a very small one bedroomed flat with my disabled wife.

To carry out any modelling, I have to move the furniture and sheet over the living room floor. Get my model/gear out of the cupboard, and return it all when I finish.

Sometimes it's just too much effort for an hours modelling, hence the time it took to complete my Schnellboote.

I chose very large models (even though in a small flat) because if I made smaller ones, I would complete too quickly, and have to have them scattered all over the flat. Plus my eyesight/fingers don't seem to want to work together .

That definitely looks the business, but too much work for me!

Oj. I would see how you go along…as I said, you will have to do a fair amount of waterproofing in any event, and when you get around to these specifics, it may be seen to be possible. Do your build, but just bare this in mind as you go along.

On mine, the key is to get the ballast so the boat is barely floating, and then a very slow forward speed is all thats necesary to put pressure on the dive planes and get it to dive. Rear `planes stay fixed horizontally for a simple dynamic diver.

Dont forget that it will only go under a short distance so the seals do not have to take much pressure..unlike a "proper" submarine being played with in a swimming pool!

In next months Model Boats magazine (November 2014) there is a Plastic Magic radio control feature on converting an Airfix HMS Trafalgar submarine into a surface running model.

Just thought there could be a few ideas in this item for anyone considering a project such as this.

                  Tony.

I have a pdf of a review of Eduard 'Big Ed' Gato detail set and a set of jpegs for a full RC conversion article. If you are interested I can email them to you.

The HMS Trafalgar article by Tony Dalton is definitely in the December issue of MB and not November as intended.

This was because the Targa article ran to three issues instead of the originally planned two.

Tony Dalton has also in the last week or so sent in another article for a 1:700 scale Trumpeter USS Hornet, powered by 4 micro motors and with full radio control. That will be in MB later in 2015.

Unfortunately I am in the middle of decorating our flat, so all modelling side lined at the moment. must keep HWMBO happy. Will post as and when I get restarted.

Just managed to get back copies of 'Model Boats' January 2006 & September 2007.

Both with articles on converting plastic Revell Submarines.

With the next copy coming out soon, I should be able to get some good tips from the experts.smiley

Made a start on the prop/shaft mods, and nearly melted the shaft tunnels because I had the drill speed to high.

Cut off the kit inner mountings for the rudder positioning, and ground back some of the surface to make clearance for rudder movement.

Waiting patiently for the December edition of 'MB'

Although I have purchased all the Eduard PE sets, I have realised that I no longer have the finger/eye dexterity required for much of it. I will stick to the larger bits that I can still seesmiley!

I have made a start on the side plates & grated decking areas. The side plates have been slightly modified so that I can use the pins and sockets to be able to make the deck/side plate area removable. The side plates required some strengthening if I want them to be regularly handled.

Having attempted (and Failed) to drill out the deck grating holes neatly, I made the decision to use the Eduard decking PE. This required the kit deck to be removed, & ribs installed to support the PE. Some of the moulded hatches/fittings will have to be separated from the kit decking and fitted to the PE in the appropriate places.

Also got a little done to the Conning Tower/Bridge, and found the pre-formed tiny wire hand-rails a bonus, as I don't think I would have managed them otherwise

Just needs tidying up before insertion into/onto the PE decking.

Going well there Gregg. Not keen on gearboxes myself, you are not going to need the revs that a speed400 provides, likely, a pair of 385 would be my choice; subs need much less power underwater than equivalent surface craft. remind me what size your props are please? Ashley

Hi Ashley, thanks for your input as I am always open to suggestions from someone with knowledge of the a genre that is new to me.

My past experiences were with R/C aircraft, so I am assuming that keeping weight down and finding the centre of balance (CG) is important. Plus keeping the electrical gubbins to the minimum, to keep the operating temperature in the WTC down.

The props are 32mm, and when I took the label off the motor it has 380 imprinted into the can surface!!!

I am trying to use as much equipment as I have in my stash, without buying too much in. Funds are at an all time low at the moment.

The gearbox is just an experiment at the moment, as I only want to run with one motor if possible.

I will only be building as a surface runner as not confident in my abilities, and all my radio gear is 2.4GHz which apparently doesn't work underwater.

                                                    Gregg

correction, the props are 30mm 4 blade!
