Can anyone tell me the correct way to align the motor with the prop shaft is it with the naked eye or is there a tool you can purchase.

      Cheers

          Hello Colin

I always make an alignment tool.

Use a length of brass or steel bar, the same length as the coupling assembly and drill each end in a lathe for the motor and prop shaft.

If you don`t have a lathe, you could use the coupling as a last resort!

                Hi Colin,
I used a lenght of brass tubing, one end slips over the motor shaft, the other end slips over the prop shaft.
If they (motor and prop shaft) are different sizes, you will find that one size of brass tubing will slip over the next size down. (and viceversa)
So you might have to use a couple of short lengths of tub ing to achieve the desired result.
                Good Luck

Colin – I usually align by eye – not the best method, but I always follow up by measuring the current drawn by the motor and minimising this by fine adjustment of the motor mount – you can also tell if it’s off-axis by the sound; if it’s a UJ coupling, you could also try making it straight and rigid by taping some lengths of metal sheet/rods around the perimeter – these can be removed once things have been aligned.
