I have a loverly vintage 6m model yacht, I would say from 1940/50s

I am in the process of restoring her and would like to add RC.

I am on a budget and think I need a basic two channel system – any recommendations.

From the hardware I have I think it used Braine steering , the rudder is an un balanced 1/2 circle of brass hung off an extension / skeg of the keel. Should I convert this to a balanced rudder.

I am not interested in racing just seeing this fantastic machine sail. I am a keen dinghy sailor and built a couple of experimental multihulls in my time.

The rudder on a braine boat was usually more of a trim tab to keep the boat on a set heading and course, rather than a steering device to change course which is what is wanted on a radio yacht. Balanced or not, it will need more authority, meaning more area. A balanced one might be less demanding on the steering servo, but will probably need some serious re-siting and an extra coat of thinking and pondering.

On a large boat, extra channels and controls to trim the sails individually is nice but not vital. 2 channel is becoming increasingly rare, given the low prices of modern multi channel sets. A 6m would need a large winch to work both sails – two more modest ones might not only be cheaper, but might make life simpler when fitting out.

Mark. Hello and welcome to the font of all knowledge (ish).

Any cheap set will do to be honest. If you need more than two channels then a Planet T5 2.4Gig set is as good as anything, about £45 or do an e-bay and get a cheap second hand 27meg or 40 meg set.

I am not a sailor but my understanding is that balanced rudders are best for powered boats, however balanced ones do reduce the forces on the tiller somewhat, Whether this makes any difference to a model is open to debate and no doubt someone will have an opinion on this. I think it may be one of those things we like to disagree on !! I have no idea personally. I would leave it as it is as it is a period feature unless it is ugly.
