Dare I mention them on here  or shall I lash myself to the ships wheel ready for the flogging.
Just wondering whether or not anyone has managed to power a model with one (or two) rather than those little tin pressings

The subject is fairly well documented, see here: http://www.nmia.com/~vrbass/pop-pop/

I don’t know if any of our members have built one though.

            Hello Stuart and Colin

It was our Autumn regatta yesterday at Etherow

This year`s Commodore`s Challenge was to construct a powered boat, which could steer a figure of eight course….without the use of an electric power source, but RC controlled

Three boats entered……one clockwork……one lacky band…….and one, a home made Pop Pop drive and it worked well……..It ran for quite a while, compared to the other two motive powers

              Nothing wrong with pop-pop`s.

After all,how many craft do you see on the water powered by a jet engine??

                Thanks all,
I’ve always been intigued by them.   Years ago I  built 2 small coiled tube ones powering 6 -8 inch craft, (slab of wood with a pointy bit)
I was wondering whether anyone had scaled  them up and run one  RC controlled in a large hull up to 3′ ish.
I might have a bash and see if I can power my launch with one. If it fails I’ll plug the holes and install conventional electric.
It will be an interseting winter project if nothing else.

Interesting project, scaling up a pop pop.

Hobbies sell pop  pops that look like upright boilers and they say 2 of them will power a craft of the size contemplated.

I think you would need a lot of extra heat to scale up one of these engines and then materials would become an issue.  Perhaps you could make a multiple chamber/coil unit , thus having in effect 3 “engines” as one unit to give more power without making the actual units themselves much bigger?

I’ve seen that one in Hobbies.
I might try multiple coil units encased in a single large diameter tube, with a gas burner as a controlable heat source and play around with tube diameters.
