Yes, yet another 21st  has arrived today and in order to celebrate properly I have revisited the excellent premises of MFA to purchase a Seahawk offshore style powerboat. Its 40 inches long and has an out-drive and 850 motor. There are several reasons for this purchase   a) I want it b) Its what I almost bought instead of the Fantome, but decided that if i bought it, i would always want a Fantome….so i have bought it anyway c)  dont want to let the special sealant and marine epoxy filler to go to waste d) When we go to the seaside to play with the Fantome, Berengar will also want something to play with. e) dont want to be out-run on the pond by some smelly RTR type.    f) all of the above , with knobs on.
If it was your birthday today….what would  YOU get   ????      Ashley

          Hi Ashley

          Many happy returns…21 again eh?

Now you have grown up you are starting to by grown up boats so I guess in 20 years you might be building proper sized model boats at 6ft long.

Only one comment about the Seahawk…only one 850….you wuss…..really treat yourself and shoehorn 2 in.

I will have to get my MFA Sperafish out and show you how its done on the big boys side of the playground.

            Hello again birthday boy

You dont need any reasons to splash out and treat yourself provided you post some photos of the build.

If it were my birthday (my next one is 50) and I had the cash….I would get a CNC machine.

Bob, Paul would use the CNC machine for making CNCs

A kit of JD would be something to behold!……………….I wonder how much a kit would cost of a model of 6`-6″?

I would have thought that a simple mental challenge to cost the construction of such a basic model wouls have been a walk in the park for someone of your abilities, couple with that the chance to improve one of Glynn’s designs. Don’t tell me that you are not tempted to have a go.

I would expect the retail price of a 6ft 6in JD kit would be around the area of £350 so you provided the CNC machine and I shall do the design work ……this time next year we will be millionaires  (or more likley stuck with a shed full of unsold kits)

So come on Bob you dont have to build the Goblin just cost the build and see if you can get it below £50.

I have it at home now, and the out drive is a very sturdy bit of plastic made by Graupner and comes with another wicked 50mm x pitch prop.
The wood bits are laser cut, which is handy and there are a few more tiddly bits to fit compared to the other one. It has some moulded racing driver heads so i wont need to find any dolls, another plus. The top is a vacform, not so nice. Most fiddly is going to be the large sheet of stickers with which to decorate the boat. I should do this as an article for MB, as an example of a “traditional” boat kit, I could do with another few hundred quid to fund my next model

Indeed…… A  chap bought a paddle steamer to the pond a while ago, it was a teeny bit workmanlike… but there were hundreds of tiny clay passengers on it and it lifted it no end and looked fantastic. from that to no dolls and only two heads to play with, and even they are two halves of plastiform to be glued together,,,,and they will doubtless need filling and repainting,    sigh….       Ashley

Bit of a faux-pas on the building front. I have glued all the bits together, and MFA advises extending the battery box to accommodate the currently supplied 12v 7Ahr battery (I suspect the instructions are as per originally issued years ago when a 6Ahr batt, or 4Ahr 12v batt was the normal item and a 7Ahr was also available but not the normal fit) but I didnt need to do this. The 7Ahr fits nicely and so i suppose the “lazer cut plywood parts” have been re-sized for the bigger cell. . the battery sits in the hull, and doesnt stick up over the top or anything, and I trimmed the thin vacform top so it fitted nicely on the top deck. BUT when I put the battery back in and tried the top, the moulded-in drivers fouls the battery  and prevents  the top from seating properly! Disaster. I have e-mailed MFA requesting can I buy a new vacform and am awaiting a reply. The alternative is to cut the battery box about a bit and lay the battery on its side.Thinking about it, that would be preferable, and lower the C of G a bit however the top is very flimsy and could do with bracing and perhaps trimming to leave a bit more depth to it to suit. Failing this i could make a lite-ply top, and cut out the drivers in their cockpit to fit in.   ho hum. Ashley

Nb I am going to spray the top, and not fit the stickers all over. These are very large and I just cant see myself sticking them down all square and flat, without having wrinkles and creases all over. i can use the name bits and numbers etc of course.   Hmmmm, metalflake Red would be nice……

Looks like metalflake is a thing of the past, at least in cans. Settled for a Ford bright red, which when sprayed on is a bit orangy? Looks nice though and the paint has gone on faultlessly. I have cut apart the battery box (in situ) and extended the bottom of it so the battery can lay on its side, and the cabin now sits on the flange where its supposed to, but the fit still wasnt great, so I have edged the bottom of the cabin with a strip on 15mm wide plasticard, and it fits nicely now. An unseen advantage of this is it has stiffened the top  up a touch  (its really annoying the cabin isnt fibreglass). The drivers heads, also a vacform moulding which i cut out and glued together with Plastic Magic cement, fell apart when trimmed…the joints become really thin. In hindsight I should have used loads of araldite which would pool behind the joints, but never mind. I had to re-glue them twice.

Although it sounds like I am having a bit of bother, these things are niggles really, and someone fore-warned about these foibles would have the thing built in two weeks. I hope to thrash it about on the pond this coming sunday, 10th  May.

I may do some surfing regarding the metalflake paint, or possibly pearlescent laquer??

Paint…perhaps no surfing, as you know what will happen, the new paint will be incompatible with the old and I will have weeks of rubbing down and repainting to put up with.

This is what the finished item looks like. And it goes a treat, when it is in radio range, which is not very far so a bit of work needed here. We were out about 1 1/2 hrs and the battery lasted ok. Not bad. With a NiMh battery in there to lighten it up somewhat it would fly. Its about a third faster than the Fantome.  Boating came to a halt towards the end when the out-drive hit a submerged…object.. and disconnected the drive. I couldnt be bothered to get the screwdriver from the car at the time but have fixed it at home. The out-drive gives great manouverability, like a Kort nozzle. However the water pours in the hole for the servo rod , and it needs a bellows type arrangement. i will have to remove the big radio box but never mind. I cant get to the screws holding the o/d on with the box in place so its best removed, i will fit a smaller one.Nothing but twaeks on this boat…the Fantome went together as per instructions…no mods, no radio issues,no water ingress.   AShley

Update, after I loosened the screws on the out-drive I actually achieved the straight-line drive as per the picture in the instructions (I cant have been pulling hard enough when I first adjusted it.) This should help performance, as the boat did go well, but cavitation was setting in unless the power was fed in slowly, the prop being too near the surface ..and its not a hydro prop. I have ditched the radio box and have fitted the servo on a seperate plinth, and will pop to Maplins tomorrow and get a small plastic box to hide the reciever in. (the Viper ESC being waterproof.) gosh i am going to kick some a###e next week   (sorry)

I may fit some trim tabs, not because they might affect the performance, but because they look like they should, and Berengar will tell all and sundry that fact and so it  WILL be faster. The Toyboata has been forgotten for a bit. (secret project)    Ashley
