All of my boats to date (well 6) have been scratch built, and now I fancy a warship, but I don’t think I would have the patience to make all the detailed fittings. Has anyone bought one of the ready to run boats of the type advertised by Howes. ‘All in the box’ for £20 seems incredible. It even includes the Nicads. I would expect to replace the motor, in fact fit 2 as I suspect there is only one. Anyone tried one of these boats?

Eddie. There is a long running thread in another model boating or possibly model warship sites concerning these things. I dont have one (but have been tempted) and the suggestion is they look great ,but on the water "as is" they are like speedboats, and of course they only have a non-crystalled r/c arrangement limiting their use with proper sets present on the water. There is no rudder so they steer by differential prop control, and this means there is not much room to put a rudder. It seems there is room to put a proper r/c set in, access can be gained by leaving some portions of the superstructure held in place on pins or by magnets. The superstructure and various bits appears to be held in place with numerous small screws. The thread suggestes the boats appear to be based on Tamiya or something kits, and with the replacement of a few dodgy items can be made to look very authentic. For £20, a bargain desperate to be modified…if it dont work, keep it as a static model.   Ashley

Thanks Ashley. I must look up the other thread. I was wondering how they managed to keep the cost of the r/c down – of course, no crystal.

Eddie. No crystal and no servos, as the speed control is usually on/off/reverse, and then to steer, one prop is stopped on the side you want to turn to. This gives the boats a very jerky motion, but there again  its only £25 or whatever. Ashley

Hi Ashley. I have been having a look at the thread on modelboatsmayhem forum, which lead me on to other links, one of which had a number of photographs of the boat ‘just out of the box’. The moulding looks quite ‘rough’, and in fact the particular kit had a fault in the hull. There was also a link to a video on YouTube. It was like a racing boat.

I also found links to the Trumpeter 1/200 kit of the Sovremenny. This looks much more professional, and does at least involve some real model building. Apparently White Ensign Desing do a set of PE parts for such things as the radar aerials, ladders and rails. So I think I might spend a bit more and get the Trumpeter kit

Have you considered the Revell FLOWER CLASS CORVETTE kit. I have built one for r/c (HMCS SNOWBERRY) and am on the way with another, this time converting the kit to HMCS AGASSIZ a short forecastle corvette. Great kit (IMO) and with a speed controller sails wonderfully. Cost here in Germany is ca.€60 ( about 40 quid ).

Nice one sir. As a new member to the forum I am rather surprised that there are not many more of these great little ships being modelled. I personally find that the kit which makes for a nice r/c modell is that from Revell who, as far as I know, have taken over the Corvette kit from Matchbox, and have carried out several improvements. I hope shortly to show some of my work on this subject in the gallery. By the way, looking at your pictures it would appear, with the hull access, that your modell is r/c . If this is so, have you any problems with water ingress as it seems that most of the deck area is removable ?.

                      Once again, nice one !

Hi , It was not a sailing model, I built it for the crew and put it in a glass case,

                        unlike this one,

Super long fcstl model, as a matter of interest is the hull self built and to what scale is the ship. I dare bet that it looks superb on the water.

All scratch built to a scale of 1/32, she does sail nice.
