          Hi Andrew,

I wouldn't automatically exclude brushed motors as there some advantages for marine use. However, that is a big model !

I'm sure the experts will be along soon to give you all the advice you need…

          Good luck with your project,

          Dave

This is the motor which SLEC suggest for the latest version of that kit. I would run it on a 6S LiPo pack with either a S55 or X55 2-blade prop. A 70A ESC will be needed, and don't even think about using a Huco-tyoe universal coupling. You need one with a solid rubber center piece, like those made by SHG Marine Models for 0.60 glow motors. Hi All,

This is dangerous information, I always fancied the the bigger H31 😀 with that set up very tempting ! Perhaps my wife needs an idea for my Christmas present.

When I first got interested in model boats about 3 years ago I bought a 48" Huntsman 31 but with the lead acid battery it was very heavy and cumbersome to move around. I've since ditched the battery and taken out the old gear which I will replace with modern stuff along with the 850 motor.

Plan was to move it on once I'd built my 1:12 version, but it is well built, apart from the cockpit, so may well keep it now. I've also now got a car with a nice level load area, unlike the previous one, so it will be easier to transport.

                        Hi Andrew

DM is spot on with the G60 motor has one of our members had one in his Fantome which is about the same size boat.

Very quick and he uses it for a video camera boat to post on you tube.

                        See under sgsteveg search.

The prototype Modav H31 46" model had an HP 61 F R/C glowplug motor. This was about the most powerful 10cc glow engine on the market at the time and claimed an output of about 1.2BHP – or around 900W. Its performance was impressive and scale-like.

The Turnigy G60 claims a maximum power output of 1500 W (2 BHP) so it will be more than powerful enough on a 6S LiPo pack. The motor costs around £50. If your friend is already familiar with brushless motors and LiPo batteries then the technology will hold no mysteries for him.

Acording to MFA's own data the 850 puts out 80W of power at maximum efficiency and cost around £30. It's also noisy and current-hungry.

I think those figures say it all.

I have seen examples of this model powered by an 850 motor and even without a stupidly-heavy SLA battery they perform like canal narrowboats. As the bloke who designed the Huntsman kit back in 1972, watching such a travesty makes me very sad.

Just for those who haven't seen a Huntsman 31 travelling at 'an approriate speed', here's a video of my little 1/16 scale one, taken by Martin Davis at Wicksteed Park a few years ago. The choice of music was his! Huntsman 31 at Wicksteed Park

The motor is a brushless Turnigy 28mm one running on a 3S LiPo.

I'm building the SLEC Swordsman at the moment and thoroughly enjoying it.

Love working with the wood construction. The bits fit together nicely but there is still some satisfying shaping to do and I will hopefully end up with a near scale model as a stablemate to my earlier Huntsman.

I would definitely NOT recommend any type of 'plastic + brass insert' universal joint as a coupling. They aren't strong enough to transmit that amount of power. I would strongly suggest he approaches SHG and has them make a BA-threaded version of their marine rubber flexi coupling (Page 20 of their catalogue). They aren't cheap but they do the job more than adequately. I now use them exclusively. SHG Catalogue

Tell him that the prices in the catalogue were current 6 years ago and they've gone up a wee bit since then. He'd best telephone SHG as they are notoriously old-fashioned and tend to leave E-Mails at the bottom of the to-do list!

I'd guess he'll need a plain 6mm-to-2BA threaded coupling, but best double-check that last dimension.

Smart money says to aim for a shaft speed (unloaded) of around 9-11,000 RPM, so a 500kv motor running on 6S (22.2v) should be in the zone.

Yes, I did forget the two T's – can't think why. That "some time" is fast approaching 50 years – scary, isn't it? surprise
