      Hi all,

I'am very keen to try a bit of model boat building, but dont know where to start or basic tools required, what I want to build is model fishing vessels for display only, I live on the isle of lewis where there is few good builders with very nice peices, wanting to try myself, does it have to be build from accurate plans to start with? whats best wood for models ect, I have a good boat knowledge as i am an ex fisherman, any advice would be most appreciated thanks in advance

          Terry,

Why not start with a kit? There are quite a few static display kits for beginners and Cornwall Model Boats have section for static display model ship kits. The request for a beginners static fishing boat does narrow the search down but there are kits to be found.

I hate making recommendations (in case things don't turn out right), but looking at Hobbies in their Model Boats static display wooden ship models, there are a couple of beginners fishing boats. The first is by Mantua, the Amalfi and the second is by Occre, the Palamos.

Research on building is of course important and this item on the Build Features section of this site is worth reading. It is the build of a static display beginners kit, HM cutter Sherbourne,

As far as tools are concerned, there was an excellent article on putting together a basic tool kit in the 2015 Special Issue of Model Boats magazine. Back copies can be ordered here:

                Hello Terry

                Welcome to the forum.

If you do opt for a kit have a good look at the reviews before you buy as some kits are complete rubbish.

As for tools these will obviously depend upon the model that you eventually choose to build as models come in a wide selection of materials ranging from plastic and glassfibre to balsa / plywood and hardwoods. When you have decided upon your choice of model then we will be able to point you in the right direction for the best tools.

Terry. I might suggest getting a simple plan, from Myhobbystore (for instance) and having a go at this first. You don't even have to finish it, but it will get you grounded regarding the skills needed and the necessary tools that will be required and a feel for the materials you will be using.

THEN you can make a more informed guess as to the sort of kit you would like to attempt for your masterpiece (assuming you go in the kit direction) or you may get a taste for plans only and cutting all the necessary bits out by hand/machine..

                  Ashley
