      Hi,

What is the best type of wood glue nowadays? I've been using the normal Evo-Stick Resin-W which Glynn Guest always uses in his magazine items.

The plastic bottle is running low and I need to buy new – is there a better alternative today?

      Thank-you,

      Tony.

I always use either aliphatic resin or Deluxe materials Super Phatic which I think are better that the standard Evo Stik glue. The Super Phatic is effectively a 'superglue' for wood (and other materials) and really effective while the aliphatic resin is suitable for larger areas and dries more quickly than Evo Stik with 'quick grab' and is more water resistant..

Evo Stik is OK but these two glues are a whole lot better to work with.

Agreed. SuperPhatic is excellent stuff but doesn't go very far before you have to re-invest. DeLuxe Materials also do a conventional Aliphatic Resin glue. I use both in tandem; the normal stuff where quick drying isn't so important. They both sand a lot easier than PVA.

Thanks for the replies, DeLuxe Materials are always an excellent product and I will order both of these suggested products. Good to hear of the quicker drying properties and easier to sand.

Thanks again for the prompt replies.

              Tony.

Are you old enough to remember the smell of the Fish glue, in the Woodwork Shop at school?

It was a pot of glue in a pot of boiling water……..It smelt lovely…..As did the smell of Harbutt`s Plasticine?

                Those were the days!

Remember the fish glue well in woodwork well, I don't remember Harbutt's Plasticine though.

Woodwork – loved it, passed it as a GCE subject.

Titebond III is a fully waterproof aliphatic glue.

It can easily be sanded and does not ball-up like PVA.

It has a set-up time of around 30 minutes and is fully hardened after 24 hours.

Wipe off any surplus with a wet cloth as it can leave a brown stain.

I like the Polyurethane construction glues as they are fully waterproof and expand to fill any gaps. Many are now 10 minute types and are moisture activated so they can be used on a damp hull, and stick most things.

If you use them on dry wood you do have to give it a light misting of water from a garden sprayer.

90% acetone, 10% petrol. Dissolve in enough (takes an awful lot) expanded polystyrene to make a thickish syrup.

Totally waterproof, fairly strong. Been using it for the last couple of years on both my model and full sized boats…

Mixing acetone and petrol…chuck some acetone in the cars fuel tank and see the speed increase.

                                  Oh happy days
