I would reccommed Aliphatic glue for wood to wood joints. Quick grab, waterproof and water cleanup. You can't go wrong really.

hi alun could you not use an epoxy resin and light scrim to sheath the hull that will be waterproof just a thought ………….. Mark

                  Hello Alun

Some glues can be expensive especially when building a large model, I tend to use waterproof PVAs such as eveostick in the blue containers.

                  pva

It doesn't have the quick grab ability of the more exotic adhesives but this isn't necessarily a bad thing as you have a greater amount of 'play time' to adjust the parts before they set into position.

I should add a caveat to my last posting:

In as much as I regard this particular PVA as being suitable for the construction of model (wooden) boats I do not advocate its use in permanent immersion or continually wet conditions.

This PVA should be regarded as splash proof and perfectly adequate for the occasional sailing that most model boats are usually subjected to.

.And of course it will have a good set of layers of something waterproof between it and any water. Sanding sealer, varnish, paint, resin all spring to mind.

my sea queen is plank on frame build , the gleu used was EVOSTICK WEATHERPROOF

as surgested by PAUL T used a lot in building trade , but also the inside the hull had a coat resin

as used for fibre glass, water tight as a ducks back side, hope this helps,…..Larry.

Alun/all. I have been beavering away lately on something that has gone from bad to worse, and have used Devcon epoxy for all my bits. Its too cold outside to wait for PVA (wot I normally use), and Devcon can be purchased in larger 25cc bottles at a much more reasonable price than Araldite. I always use the 5min stuff as I am V impatient.

I have also been using Gorilla glue lately, as its economical when glueing together large items, and 200% waterproof. No good for small joints though.

When all else fails I use Araldite Rapid Epoxy it hasn't let me down in over 20 years.

                                    Hello Alun

All of the glues previously mentioned will do the the job ultimately it depends upon how quickly you want the glue to work.

PVA wont provide instant grab so you will have to clamp the work whilst the glue sets however this does give you the option of extended 'play time' so you can adjust any problems.

The instant grab glues are very convenient if you are confident of getting it right first time but beware that any mistake can be fatal for the hull skin.

                                    Paul

                                      Hello Paul

thank you for the advice I was going to use gorilla glue but have read that you don't have a lot of play time as it were and I don't want to hash it up lol so I think I might go down the PVA route this will give me plenty of time to line every thing up just right . Once again thanks for the advice

                                        Hello Alun,

basic frame works and bulkhead looks good , use pva glue for skins ,

dry fit all tempory fix with mask tape , start with bottom skins first, trim back to bottom stringers so nice and tidy , when this all fixed and dry , fix side skins with slight over lap,

when every thing is nice and dry trim back over lap a nice rub down with sand paper,

                                        fill any gaps with p38

sand again , if happy give first coat of primer,

now go to inside of hull and give coat of resin pay attensoin to joints aply a bandage if required

its a big boat so will need a lot of TLC …….

what power are you going to use ?…

                                        hope this helps cheers Larry…

Gorilla glue expands like billy-o, and needs clamping good and proper or it will move all your work about. great stuff under the right conditions, be careful as to when you use it.
