hi all, maybe being a bit thick here but how do you fit the screw shaft through the stern, is it as easy as ‘just drill a hole’ should I do this before planking the hull?

It’s many years since I built this model, and I forgot about drilling for the tube until I had planked the hull. I drilled through without any problems, starting with a small pilot hole and then useing 2 larger bits, I finished the hole with a round file. Taking your time and getting things lined up before you drill will help
Accuracy is important, and this method allows for some correction if the drill goes off centre.
Good luck with the build, it makes a great model, mine sailed very well.

thanks Charlie, I suppose it’ll be the same principle for the rudder,! If you remember any good tips on building the Nordkap, please let me know, this is a bit of a step up for me as I’ve only ever done the static Norden before!!

Hi Colin, Yes the rudder is done in much the same way. I like to install the prop shaft first, and put a prop on, then I can make sure that the rudder has the correct clearance from the prop, remembering that you may want to remove the prop without removing the rudder first.
Two things stand out in my memory about the Nordkap, firstly that the two projections that go to the hull capping from the aft superstructure are very thin and easy to break,. I epoxied some brass tube to the inside of them to give support.
The second thing was that when I first sailed it in choppy water it bobbed a lot, pitching with the bow and stern going up and down. I moved the battery and ballast away from the centre of the boat so it was in two parts, with the battery as far forward as possible and the lead as far back as I could. This helped a lot and made the boat very manageable.
I hope that helps, Keep posting if you’ve any problems.

Brilliant, thanks, i was going to either glue some scrap wood or build the superstructure up with some filler before drilling..No doubt I’l be asking lots more questions…..
