20250611_11531420250611_11515220250611_115239I love planking a hull , each plank you fit gives you a sense of what the finished hull shape will be until the last plank is fitted and its like ( excuse me for going poetic here) putting a beautiful body on a skeleton  . I sometimes sit back and think wow !! That’s amazing what putting a few strip’s of wood on a frame can turn into ,it almost like magic .

Only ever done it once Mick, and that was only a pair of a clinker dinghy and a lifeboat, but I totally agree.  I found it fascinating that such a beautiful complex curved shape could be created from straight planks of wood.  It just goes to show how clever we were in the days long before computers or even basic technology when we worked out, with nothing to help us, how to create such shapes from straight planks of wood created from cutting a tree down.

I agree with you Richard . I’m not a Luddite but I sometimes feel humanity has lost something by letting computers take over everything.  What’s the next thing, is AI going to take over everything as well making the steam driven computer obsolete . I can see a future where art, engineering, music and anything creative will be taken out of the hands and minds of men and women and be generated by Artificial intelligence. Thankfully I am at a age where I will not be here to witness this happening,  but I despair what my kids ,grandchildren and great-grandchildrens future will bring .

I find working in wood very rewarding. It is such a versatile material. I made a point of constructing my Greek Fishing Boat almost exclusively from wood as per the original and really enjoyed it. That was basically plank on frame but my other models are wood based with a combination of sheet, plank on frame and block construction.

That’s the big thing for me as well and doubt I would have taken up the hobby otherwise. Building my last two boats using plank on frame has been very satisfying and throwing up challenges!

Never done plank on frame, other than some crude stuff like the ends of the GP hulls.

Not sure I have the patience, and for the few things I might have planked to get that sort of shape, I used solid foam covered in fibreglass and hollowed out.

Definitely, building a plank on frame hull can be very rewarding.   Building any hull with any form of materials from scratch is an achievement in itself.   There are several ways to plank a hull.  Some hulls you can make the bow and stern from solid materials and plank between them longitudinally.  Sometimes though you can diagonally plank the hull which can be even more rewarding because, on a displacement round chined hull, you have to taper the planks to take into account of the radius of the hull.   One long side, one short side.  Couple of pics – one is the Crusader under construction and the other one is the Fairmile B.

The hull of the prefederation 1890s Queensland mine layer is fully planked and off the strong back. You can now see the hull shape with its distinctive bow , I’m really getting into this build as its so different to another ship I’ve built but plenty of challenges ahead to look forward to . This one is going to put my intermediate modeling skills to the test and hopefully along the way it teach me new techniques 20250620_11594620250620_115935

                        Hi Mick,

Another top job 🙂 She would make an ideal plan feature in the magazine, and you would make a few dollars from it to cover your building costs 🙂

                        Regards  Ray
