varnishing pinstripe tape

I need to put at least million White lines on my Invincible carrier, and found some old car white pinstripe tape.Its a tiny bit wider than I might have chosen, but it was there in the box and so..

 

Having stuck some down last night and seeing that it was ok this morning I have done the rest ….BUT a few small sections are lifting (just the odd 3/4 inch here and there), which, to be honest is what i thought might happen it being old and all that and so…the question..

 

Do you think that a coat of matt varnish will keep these errant sections down or not? (assuming it dries before the bits lift..which is likely as matt varnishes usually dry fairly quickly)

I don’t think just varnishing over will be enough unless you use epoxy resin! You need to either reactivate the old glue under the tape or introduce something else. As a first option I’d try slightly warming the tape with a hairdryer and pressing it down which might be sufficient.

 

Next option is to work some sort of thin glue or maybe something like Deluxe Materials’ Eze Cote under the offending lengths. Something waterbased would be best as you can wipe off any excess without damaging the surrounding area.

 

If that doesn’t work you will just have to do what you should have done in the first place; stop being such a tightwad and buy some Trimline tape!

Colin, you are so right of course.

 

I think I stretched some of the tape when applying, thats the main problem. I may simply cut and insert somew new lengths. There are only 4 small pieces lifting and they have been under kitchen weights overnight and this may do the trick. We will see tonight!

 

The rest of it is ok. I like the idea of using eze-cote (as I have some of that as well!!)

The kitchen weights seem to have done the trick, and I have now applied two coats (one before going to work) of Blackfriars matt acrylic varnish over the deck.

 

Looks good, has evened out the brush marks nicely but doesnt appear to be very matt?? I gave the tin a good stir second time, although there didnt seem to be any settling after I had given the tin a good shake initially.

 

I had a wizard wheeze, to keep the lad Berengar interested in the boating thing, and that was to make an escort vessel, a Type 22 batch 2, to the same scale as the carrier !! works out at about 33″ by 3 1/2 inches. Somethjing in the “Glyn Guest” style, would be good, all my ships are to odd scales so nothing matches. The type42 i have is 52″ long and so even bigger than the carrier.
