This probably won't be much use to you because of the very small size wheel you need, but it might help someone else and maybe give you an idea for another different method.

The one on Huntress is 25mm OD. I first bent some ali tubing around a former and joined the two ends with a wire insert and epoxy. I cut and soldered together six pieces of brass wire as the spokes. I then made a 2-part silicon-rubber mould, using the wheel rim and spokes as patterns. I cut some new spokes, lay them into one half of the mould and closed it up with the other half. Casting resin was introduced with a syringe via the small channels I'd made and the completed rim and spokes removed when set. The hub was made from styrene circles epoxied each side of the spokes. Like I said, a perfect swine and I wish I'd made it a little larger now. Maybe the next one?

The dials were copied, pasted and scaled from a manufacturer's catalogue using Photoshop and CorelDraw, then printed onto inkjet decal paper and fixed to the dashboard. The bezels are slices of plastic tubing – walls are too thick, but it'll do until I find something better. I can't remember the sizes but the wheel is 25mm across, so you can get a pretty good idea from that.

Excellent Job Dave, really nice, it could almost be full size and will look it on the pond. I love the tip up seats to access the cabin etc. Very ingenious.

I was looking at the Huntress in Portsmouth Dockyard a week ago and was struck by how wide the boat is compared to its length, the cockpit is huge. It's so much more attractive that the modern white plastic bathtubs that are all you see today.

One of my correspondents used to be a marine surveyor and told me that he's always thought of the Faireys as 'Powerboat Porn' – with the Huntress as the centrefold! I have to confess that after the smooth curves of an H31 I didn't like the Huntress with her sharp corners and big fat transom, but as I went through building #1 she just grew on me. Those slimy Sunseekers and their ilk are just not in the same league.

Here's a video of the restored "Dawn Huntress" doing her thing as the sun goes down over the River Tyne. Turn up the speakers LOUD! **LINK**

have you done an Albacore yet?

I admire your taste in boats though.

That one in the link sounds like a cross twixt a lorry and a Lancaster!

                            Lovely model.

Dave, it's my day for being misunderstood. The Albacore was a nice sailing dinghy. What I actually meant was the Atalanta. A lovely reverse sheer round decked sailing cruiser.

Or the Faun, a Sea Urchin with an outboard<G> I would never suggest aircraft to a confirmed boaty type, never fear.

It would have been nice to have been there but unfortunately I didn't make the video of Dawn Huntress. I'm trying to blag a trip on Scott Pett's H31 "Mirak" when he gets her finished, but in the meantime I've just got back from MoB's maiden voyage at Papplewick. With a 2836 750kv motor, a 1315 Prop Shop 3-blade prop and a 3S LiPo she looks superb – just like the video of the big one. The 'sit' in the water and the speed are just perfect – I'm well pleased!

You're absolutely right there. I wouldn't take issue with anything on your list, although I would add the Lancaster and F6 Lightning. Nothing beats standing at the noisy end of twin Avons on full reheat while the ground shakes under you and The Beast climbs almost vertically away – although a squadron 'stream' take-off involving six Vulcans stirred the blood once!

It's not sure whether it's a 60's powerboat or a 70's posing machine, with the result that it's neither. It looks like a Huntsman 31 hull but with t'upperworks made by Tupperware. Horrible, but thanks for researching for me!

Dave, I should have remembered the Lightning, my father in law supplied parts for them. I also heard the legendary tale about the Italian pilots applying full re heat just after take off. Screams all the way to 40 000 feet! Well, they had been told not to.

And the pulse of all the Lancaster's engines. Wow.

The best noise ever was when a Vulcan gave a display in Scarborough. I was on top of Oliver's Mount, the Vulcan was level with us. He raised the nose and opened the taps, full re heat. UN blooming lievable.

We saw the last Vulcan display at Duxford two years ago, towards the end of which I could hear the engines being spooled up for what was to follow. That was a near-vertical climb of maybe 2000 ft, during which he had everything turned up to #11 and I yelled a very loud two-word expletive – no-one heard me! That sounds like the same stunt you saw pulled. Of such stuff are memories made. One wonders what Ray Hannah could have done with a Vulcan…….
