Prop and Motor for Lochmor

I am relatively new to model boats – my first was a tug from a free plans and this is my second boat.  I am building MV Lochmor ( a Calmac ferry), scale approx 1:35, plank on frame, to a plan from Nexus.  The boat is 860mm long, beam 227, and 5.78kg.  The plans suggest 2 no. monoperm motors and a handed pair of 50mm four blade brass props.  At the model boats show a supplier recommended a 540/1 motor geared 2:1 for this propeller, however he suggested that current practice would be to use a smaller prop ( to scale ) with a direct drive motor.  Unfortunately I have been unable to establish the original prop size.  Does anyone have any thoughts on what would be appropriate for a model of this size / type? 

 

( I’ll post a photo of the hull so far when I work out how to do this).

I would start with 35mm 4-blade props. If you want to use direct drive then perhaps a pair of Mabuchi 555 motors on 12v. This will give plenty of power. If you’re inclined towards just pottering around then 30mm 3-bladers with 385 motors would possibly be adequate (7.2v maybe?).

O yes – plastic props are only for toys (head down now – wait for incoming missiles!!)

Raboesch Type A or Prop Shop Scale-type are both suitable, but sit down before you see the price….

DM. Nowt wrong with plastic props !! (for certain applications)

However… why do they only do them in black?? or worse, red?? why not Gold colour…and why such a shallow pitch?

I have a 35mm Black plastic on Berengars Island class patrol boat (some sort of 500 on 6v) and its fairly pitchy, and has a longer boss point than usual, no idea of the make or where I got it. Shame, because it works really well. Plastic COULD be good, as the blades would be thin and sharp..but….
