      Hi, it’s me again,
Just enjoyed browsing through many of the ‘scratch build’ threads and as I’m a professional oil painter loving to paint sailing as well as early tramp steamers naturally I would love to make a model of some of these ships, but where does one start to find a suitable plan of a ship that doesn’t fall into a comercial plan . For example, having read of the demise of the ss Anglo Saxon and the epic voyage of the two survivors I would love to model this, but where does one start ?
Would love you to point me in the right direction

There ar very few model makers plans of tramps steamers that are much good.   What is wrong with a commercial plan?   I know they have everything on them, but at least you know they are accurate.   When you mention ANGL0-SAXON, I suppose you mean Lawther & Latta’s ship.    She was built at Short Brothers, Sunderland, so maybe Tyne & Wear Archives have the plans.

I am currently building a coaster roughly* following the plans in a book “The Model Shipbuilder” by the late JKD Hutchison, RN and Commander Gerald G Porth RNR.
Published G. Bell and Sons Ltd London  1949  If you have some way of accessing the book through your Library perhaps.   Mine on loan from our Club library. It would probably be called a ‘semi-scale’ model after the style of Glynn Guest … that’s how I’m building her though the book has hull lines for aa ‘proper’ hull.

            * I aim to fit her with a steam engine so am moving the funnel and deck structures forward.  The design is a ‘stepped’ design [ don’t know the cirrect term for that] with the hatches forward of the bridge lower than those mid-ships in front of the motive power structure deckhouses funnel etc..
