Painting advice with Depron

I have a supply of Depron from another project and want to use it for the superstructure on my fire tender model. In the past I have covered the structure with nylon stocking and epoxy as per Ron Rees’s method. It would be rather fiddlely to do this as there are many nooks and crannies. As anyone tried painting the Depron directly? and which paints don’t eat it!

Hi Graham,

Anything water based paint is safe , I use a water based resin from Bucks Composites on blue foam and Depron.

Blimey Ron Rees that’s a blast from the past , an excellent modeller I met him a few times back in the old days 🙂

Ashley Needham is probably the person to answer that but he has not been on the forum  in the last week or so.

Acrylic paints won’t affect Depron but they are vulnerable to abrasion so should be protected. An acrylic varnish should do the job but there may be other options.

you could  seal the Depron using an acrylic type resin such as Deluxe Materials EZeKote before painting but it’s not cheap stuff. Sometimes the traditional methods using birch ply are the cheapest and most effective option.

I’m not altogether sure if you could achieve the crispness of a Fire Tender superstructure using Depron but others may be able to advise you.

Ashley has had problems logging in but has emailed me with the following comments:

Ezekote the depron first then use almost anything (but car spray paints) would be my take on the matter.
I can’t see getting a nice finish though and it’s very fragile. Stockings and glue or whatever…something from the past. As you said…1.5mm ply is the way to go.

0.8mm ply over 10mm styrofoam formers  can produce a very light top and also provides a nice smooth surface to start off with painting wise
