1st let me give thanks to Neil for the base mouldings for this model.
For hin it is simply an accessorie for his current life boat build.
For me it is my 1st lifeboat in its own right.
The intention is to make it functionall and I believe I have sorted the details of the radio gear bty etc. Even the problem of the servo to steer it looks much easier than I at 1st thought. Basically I intend to mount the servo inside the outboard cover, with the actuating arm out through the side and a fine rod running to the pivot point of the mount, so the outboard will still lift into the stowage position. the servo control wire and motor power leads will run under, what I believe are, the fuel tanks that run up the inside of the sponsons. to hide the rest of the gear away I’ve chosen to model D-719 as this one has a hard stowage locker under the forwd spray sheet, this will allow ample space for the electronics.
The only other issue is the bty’s and I have a source of LiPo cells that are only 5mm thick and so hopefully I’ll get them under a false deck

Now for the pics so far!
1st the sponsons cut out and glued

then the hull bottom and inner sub deck fitted

and then the filler to smooth the joints out

      and all rubbed down

Now she needs a little more filler (fine grade) and then its all the belting and patches etc and the f’rwd locker and spray sheet before a coat of paint.

              Hi Phil

It may be a little late now, but you could have scaled the model up and built it with plastic tubing?………That would have been quite impressive!

              Next time, eh?

                  Hi Neil

Just thought, the model could easily be constructed from B&Q plastic tubing…..Especially since Phil has something to copy!

As you know……I LIKE BIG UNS!

The only good thing about 1/12 scale is all the dolls house stuff that is availabell!

I made the plug for the vac forms from waste pipe to begin with……..found an amazing solvent to stick it all …..glued and set within seconds, much the same as plastiweld does with HIPs……..but can’t find the tin so forget what it’s called.

Then I filled it with resin so that it wouldn’t fall apart, lol,

but yes you are right…….can I see a future wave rider coming from your slipway,???

But which one?…….Really spoilt for choice!

have you thought [ excellent but expensive]of mountfleet models largest trawler…..St Nectan and asking for their Sir lancelot set of Armed trawler fittings, and turn it into a lovely big armed trawler…….she would make a magnificent model.

No worries lads its not as if your posts are either getting in the way or on a subject other than model boats. I’f your looking for a steam engine Bob try going to “Miskin models” he’s on the web and has a cracking 2 cylinder slide valve kit ready machined. all self starting etc and runs a dream and his price is pretty good too. He fetched one to our little show in wellington last year.

just a little more progress so far today the pic says it all really apart from the fact that the prop has been changed as the original was overloading the motor. this mod has increased thrust and reduced current draw

another bit done this afternoon the longitudinal side belting this is from the pictures I’ve got a very prominent feature and hopefully once its painted it will look reasonably realistic

It’s taken me nearly 3 weeks but finally she’s close to being painted. just the rings for the grab lines to fit and its of to halfords for some VW brilliant orange.

The steering is affected by a servo hidden in the top of the outboard and all the control electronics (including an esc thats not as big as a pound coin) are hidden with a diminutive 2s1p 800mah lipo in the stowage locker.

Nice model………..I`m a bit surprised you are going to paint it?……..As it looks most realistic as is!
I like the stripes and patches etc

Thanks Bob the orange is indeed about right but the horizontal rubbing strip, the internal floor, the patches that secure the grab lines and internal fuel tanks, and the lifting handles, should be black.
the stripes around the sponsons are supposed to be orange the same as the main part of the boat and have been added prior to painting to give the relief affect that is present on the real thing.
The spray sheet over the stowage locker should be orange and the door of said locker black. the oblong above that door is the radio. there is a pic of the real thing in my album of this build but the site won’t let me show it in the posts for some reason.
