This report by the MAIB is interesting as it shows how fitting a futuristic bridge design to a ship was a major factor in a serious collision.

I see from the report (p 20) that the City of Rotterdam’s hemispherical bow (which takes most of the blame for the collision) was designed to reduce carbon emissions….

All that fancy radar and yet a cheap, bow-mounted CCTV camera with a big screen on the bridge might have prevented that off-axis motion thing that made the pilot mistake the direction of travel.

It's for sure they're going to emit a helluva lot of carbon dioxide welding up those great big holes.

In Portsmouth dockyard recently I picked up a cut price commemorative history of the last HMS Illustrious which gives some very interesting insights in the RN operations over the last three decades. Something that cropped up on several occasions was when entering a foreign port for which a local pilot was mandatory the pilot was frequently confused by the bridge not being on the centreline of the ship and the Captain had to take corrective action.

As I may have mentioned previously, there are now two sets of poles sticking out of the water within Portsmouth Harbour and outside it which will be used to align the bridge of the new carriers to ensure that they pass through the entrance without scraping the sides.

I find it amusing – almost incredible – that in these days of military GPS, which can place a vessel to within fractions of a metre anywhere on the earth, two multi-billion-pound aircraft carriers will rely on poles sticking up out of the water to get safely into port. It's crying out for a couple of 'Jackass TV' idiots to sneak in overnight and move them.

They are quite large poles Dave, see below. But yes, when we went to New York on QM2 the harbour was fogbound to the extent you couldn't see more than a few yards plus it was still almost dark. Yet they turned the ship around and berthed her alongside the quay at Red Hook, Brooklyn with no fuss using presumably just radar and GPS. We were on deck and didn't see the quay until the ship was just a few feet away from it. Amazing really.

In our modern age is there any such thing as truly original design or do designers simply tap into their memories and make adaptions?
