Thanks. They were very broad and deep and if they got caught unexpectedly in a gale of wind with all sail set, the canvas would just disintegrate rather like a blowing fuse and the ship would generally survive. They also carried either a considerable amount of cargo or ballast. If you do a Google search for "sailing ship County of Roxburgh," you will find some pictures of her as she is today, 106 years after being driven ashore on a Pacific island.
