This monster came into Holyhead -I think for shelter.

it’s not easy to get pictures as the harbour is restricted access.

It towers above the surrounding buildings

          Hi Bri,

That wind turbine planting ship must be a beast when it jacks it's self out of the water.

The South coast is littered with turbines now !! I wonder how many years of power generation it takes to pay back the build & erection costs ?? 😲

          Regards Ray

A quick Google shows the energy payback for manufacture and installation of an off-shore 8 MegaWatt turbine is about 7.4 months – less if it is a bigger machine.

              Hi Francis,

That's much faster pay back than I expected, let's hope the wind keeps blowing 😀

              Regards Ray

Hi there was a program about it a while back. They pin point it when setting up.

There are 100 turbines in Liverpool bay. At night it looks like a city at sea especially with the gas platforms all lit up.

Shame I could not get nearer to take more pictures.

I talked to some offshore electrical engineers last year. They reckon that once the ground station has been fitted, and the main pole, the top and blades go on in a day (or it might have been just the blades??). If you think about it, they have to otherwise the out of balance forces of half fitted hub in an overnight wind might be disastrous.

Drove past some turbine blades a few years ago. Like jumbo jet wings. unimaginably huge….and according to the engineers, they were getting bigger.

Its surprising the proportion of our overall power generation comes from offshore windmills.

A novel pond model!!! (if a bit useless)

If you are interested in building such a model, contact 'Mobile Marine Models', they could put you in touch with Adrian who has built & displayed a model of a 'Jack up ship', which may inspire you.
