The March 2019 issue of MODEL BOATS contains a free plan of a typical US Harbour tug James P. Woods designed by Dermot Curnyn. For those who would like the original 1/35 scale version, which was too big for our standard A1 sheet, please see the link below.

The 1/35 scale version plan is on two sheets and can be downloaded from the link below:-

Thanks, just cutting out and laying down the keel…s?

Really looking forward to my first scratch build. Might go for steam but will decide as the hull takes shape.

I'll do my best Ray, but I've moved over from 5" live steam locos as they are too heavy for my arthur itis and a bit out of touch with my wooden side. laugh

              Regards Roger

                Hi Roger,

It's good to have a change of direction, I find the woodwork good therapy, I'm a secret live steamer when the mood takes me 😀 I know where your coming from with the weight lifting !!I

My tug Cullamix has 25lbs of old wheel castings as ballast.

                Regards Ray

Just making my first model boat, the James P Woods, and I am following the instructions given in Magazine Vol 69 No 820 – 822. I haven't been able to get the magazines 823-824. My problem is that I don't know if these magazines (823-824) will give me further instructions on how to install the motor, the drive shaft and the rudder, etc. and the size. Does anyone know if the final instructions are in these numbers? Unfortunately I live in NZ so getting back copies will prove a little hard, but not impossible (I hope). I probably should have started on something less complicated but I love the look of the boat.

                    Bill

Hi. Bill.welcome to the forum, a couple of us have built the James P.Woods,if you look at the Tug of two halves you may get some help from that.

The boat is nice and makes a good stable towing vessel in the larger size.

The two issues of MB contain info on the running gear and radio layout in No 824, No. 823 refers to covering the hull with resin and glass fibre, construction of the lifeboat and making transfers, plus rudder construction.

Keep us informed of your progress and any problems you may have we will try to help you with.

Best wishes from a very wet UK early winter.

                      Eddie.
