Living close to the entrance to the Mersey vessels come and go and good conditions for photography are not always favourable but I had been waiting to get a shot of the Customs vessel Seeker and following seeker in was The giant Maritime and Coastguard Agency tug “Anglian Monarch” , two in one day , my luck was in !!

Dave, had to photograph the tanker Navion Britannia across the water at Tranmere, when I was in Liverpool last December.

Here`s an interesting ship, not entering the Mersey, but leaving the Mersey
            The tall ship……..Stavross S Niachos

Hi Bob good to hear from you . Great pictures , I like the Stavross a photogenic ship . I am about 5 mintes from the lighthouse .Which is my usual vantage point . But as you know you can predict the tide and traffic on the river but the weather conditions are not always on your side. here is one terrible picture that says it all about the right and wrong conditions and when not to shoot a picture !!!! Although to be fair it was a wee ways off!!

Hi Ron………It looks as though it`s already worn out!………LOL…..Only joking

So you live only 5mins from the lighthouse?…..I had no idea you lived on the beach!…..lol…….That`s another joke

I lke your blurry ship picture….it`s full of atmosphere and drama!

Hello ARH Trying to get the feel of what it can not do, now I know
                    Dave Wooley
Hi Bob Ok don’t believe the rumors the lighthouse is not my second home!!

!!! but I do live within easy walking distance .

Even on a cold winters day this is why i like the spot so much
As you know Bob just where I stand to get the pictures is one of the best seats in the house “Fort Perch Rock” It’s as good a vantage point as the round tower at the entrance to Portsmouth harbour .
And this is why I like perch Rock so much .
Mind you not all the interesting ships are big ones !!
These pictures where taken a few days ago and on the shore it was really cold but if the tide and sun are in the right place then to suffer a wee bit is a small price to pay.

Hi Tony good shot and the Mersey Ferries not only offer dock tours and a “sea trip” but are an excellent vantage points to snap the odd picture or two at high tide.

Some more boats coming in, on a lazy Sunday afternoon

I can clearly remember, we had a lucky perilous escape from this very spot, where the fishermen are standing……..About 30 years ago!

We were metal detecting at the time and suddenly the entire beach turned into a wibbly wobbly jelly!
Luckily, we managed to get to safety, where we spotted a sign……”Do not walk on beach……Dangerous quicksand”
The quicksand has long gone now, by the introduction of strategically placed tidal barriers

Hi Bob yes I can remember only to well the “shifting sand” I was caught out as a child wandering to far and almost being cut off , time and tide and all that !! .
Also a wonderful vantage point for shipping entering the estuary at the right time is on Crosby Beach on the other side of the Mersey looking towards the North Wales coast

. Famous for its Antony Gormley “Iron Men”

Hi Bob now that’s a rare shot and a nice one .Very seldom that calm at high tide . At low tide you can of course walk safely to the light house and beyond , once again offering an exellent vantage point. Ellesmere Port Boat Museum also offers a superb location for taking advantage of traffic on the Manchester Ship Canal .

this one’s right up your street (but across the river) on the old “Canadian Pacific” berthings if I remember correctly, just down river from the Steam Packet.

Today Sunday the conditions and traffic entering and leaving the River Mersey was good .

Here the RFA Small Fleet Tanker Black Rover is entering the channel .

                                          Nice pictures Dave

The last on reminds me of a distant memory……….Ben My Chree

In 1946, Mother won the grand sum of……£12-12-6d…….on the football pools!

This paid for a day trip for two adults and three kids to the Isle of Man!…….We sailed on the Benn My Chree and came back on the Lady of Man

At the time, the Mersey was full of WW2 sunken ships!………I can clearly remember, seeing the masts and funnels sticking out of the water and it was a very sombre sight. The boat had to steer a course through them.

I also remember seeing several Sea Forts out to sea and they looked really macabre!

                                          This was 65 years ago!

Hi Bob yesI to remember those semi -submerged wrecks now only the wreck buoy . Don't recall the forts though .

Just entering the channel and the only point where you can get a full bow on shot with out any back drop . Here the tanker Alfa Italia at full load entering the channel, maximum distance for the camera even though the conditions where good.

                                            At the Bar

Also in one of the frames this unusual small vessel i think it services the Wind Farm .

                                            Unusual

And this with the huge tube for depositing bulk feed . How do they manage to get a good viewfrom the bridge ?
