Today I have been making the two lifeboats. Yes, I know that coasters normally had canvas-covered boats, but I have never had much success with producing realistic canvas covers, so I am making them hollow. I will put the bottom boards and thwarts (seats) etc in later. These are just the boat shells, fitted with grablines and the keel. The boats would be uncovered from time to time for various reasons, boat drill, maintenance, or if they were wooden boats, taking up the seams from time to time (The wood tended to shrink if they dried out too much, and made them leak – a bit of water in the form of rain would soon tighten them up).

Nice work. Do you use a magnifying glass to see such small detail?

Just reading glasses. The boats are not all that small, just over an inch long, so much larger that reading the written page in a book! Helen Craig is quite large scale for me at 16 feet to the inch. This one is 32 feet to the inch!!
