      Hi everyone,

As posted in Soapbox I am back after a long period of modelling malaise.
I have been re-bitten by the bug  partly caused by the free plan in the latest issue of MB.

I thought I would open this thread for anyone else who may be thinking of building an HDML so we can exchange ideas, get answers to problems etc.

I would like to report my progress and post pictures as I go. However, I can’t promise how regular my reports will be due to pressures of work etc.

I plan to scratch build as far as possible including the hull. One thing I like about scratch building is watching the hull take shape as frames and planking come together. I am not a lover of preformed styrene hulls but perfectly understand anyone wanting to take that route. After all it would speed up the build process and the price of the hull from MyHobbyStore is very reasonable. I am sure I would be hard pushed to purchase the timber any cheaper, we shall see.

So to start I am giving the plans a good studying and will copy the frames etc to make templates. ( for my own use Ed, honest). I shall leave it at that for now as she who must be obeyed has just put a glass of beer in front of me. Who am I to disobey???
      Off to study those plans

            Hello Bob,

HDML is Harbour Defence Motor Launch. Whilst originally built for this role they, like most ships in WWII, were used in many other roles.

              Hello Dave,
I’m a complete beginner as far as model boats are concerned, I must admit that the HDML has caught my imagination but i’m wondering if it would be more than I can handle at this stage.

A few weeks ago I slipped on the ice and broke my ankle and faced with at least 6 weeks off work with my leg in plaster, looked around for something to occupy me for a while, I’d often thought I’d like to get into boat modelling so I guess this was the excuse I was looking for.
After a brief look around I settled on the New Maquettes “Le Patrick” kit which I’m now part way through. I’m really enjoying it and already thinking of what comes next?

If I decided to do the HDML I’d probably go the pre formed hull route as obviously I wouldn’t know where to start a scratch build. Even the superstructure construction worries me a little but I’m very tempted to have a go, more thought needed here I guess, I’ll let you know what I decide and I’ll obviously follow this thread with great interest.

                  regards

                    Hi Arthur,

Just click on the image of the HDML at the top of the left hand column on this page. The PDF page turning facility may take a few seconds to open.

Thanks again Colin. I think the link was a bit slow. It took some time to open. I have printed the article to read and to use as reference. This project will test my manufacturing skills. In South Africa we either look for some components to use on the internet or we manufacture ourselfs. Will post some photos of my workshop. It looks like a small engineering company. We dont have specific hobby shops for boating. They tend to  look after planes and cars only.
                        Regards

                          Hi everyone,
I thought I should post an update in case you think I have abandoned ship
I did intend to scratch build the hull as it it is one of my favourite parts of scratch building but due to having my workshop (garage) turned into a storage facility for my sons furniture etc (he is between properties and will be for some time) I will have very limited access to my power tools and in order to keep domestic harmony I have decided to purchase the hull from Myhobbystore. She Who Must Be Obeyed will not be impressed with sawdust etc from my saws if I cut out keel and frames in the house, can’t think why.

I did say I am not fond of styrene hulls. They seem to be prone to flexing and I wonder if this can lead to drive problems. Having read the past articles however, I have more confidence and am willing to have a go. I can always make a new hull at a later date or even better make a second HDML..  Hull has been ordered and I will report when I receive it. In the mean time I am starting to look at some of the sub assemblies such as the weapons as they are models in their own right.

I have found the first page of the past article I had in my archive its title being HDML Revisited by Paul Freshney.

Have received the styrene hull direct from the vac form company carrying out the work for Myhobbystore.

I must admit to have been a little unsure about my decision  to use this hull but have to say I am very happy with the one I have received. It is made from 2mm thick plastic and as a result is surprisingly rigid considering the length.  The keel has been very sharply defined and the deck line is very clearly marked thus making trimming to size fairly easy. Another surprise was the lack of any real blemishes in the hull so preparing for painting etc should take little time.

My prejudice towards styrene hulls came about due to a model I attempted to make some time in the past using a plastic hull which was so flimsy I gave up. This example has certainly changed my mind.
