Hi John   Is finishing tissue too fine?

Depends where you live I can get small amounts of fiber glass materials from a local Marina, its not worth mail order small quantities. Otherwise try this firm, Ifound them very helpful.

Hi John. Should be able to get the fine stuff in car type shops, the trick is finding a "traditional" shop that stocks all the odds`n`sods. OR try Art suppliers/artist shops.  Hobbies catalogue has some, u can order online at http://www.alwayshobbies.com . ALSO I get larger quantities of resin etc at my local boat chandlers. useless info if you dont have one handy of course, but I find they stock a good range of fibreglass products, including paint stripper specifically for removing paint from fibreglass.. Could somebody recommend what type of resin and matting to use for casting a hull from a plaster mold

I have always used the stuff from Halfords.
I have never found it nessessary to FG a wooden hull, just paint it.

David, I would be VERY careful casting a glass hull from a plaster mold.
Plaster is porous and if ANY resin gets to it you will need to break the plaster mold to get the hull out, and the hull would be pretty rough afterwards in any event.
You may succeed using a number of coats of release agent on the plaster, but still chancy.
If you still have the plug, make a f/glass mold. Your success ratio would be very much higher.

                          Hi Eric.
Thanks for that but i have been down the fibreglass mold road and had big problems releasing the cast even though i coated and buffed with wax 6 times and used PVA agent on top of that ( which left the cast streaky ). Would the plaster mold be ok if i sealed it with a waterproofing sealer then apply the wax coatings as before.
                          Best regards Dave

                              G’day, David
I can only suggest you have been using the wrong brand of release agent.
I have cast a few molds & even more yacht hulls & never (touch wood) had any trouble releasing either type of project.
I bought my materials from a marine store, no point in recommending it, I’m in South Australia, sorry.

                                  Helllo everybody,

As a newcomer in the business I benefit a lot from the vise questions and answers in this forum.

I am building the Fairmont Alpine as my first build ever, and will certainly need some tightening stuff the keep it afloat.
Is this the stuff from Halfords Len is mentioning further up in the thread

I guess this would be the filler to use before sanding and matting.

                                    Hi Niels,

Thats the stuff i have used on many occasions before to give my hulls rigidity and make them water tight, dont mix too much resin at once as it tends to set really fast!, any 2 part car body filler will do, but you can buy an easy sand version wich makes life easier.

                                      Gary,

                                      Thanks for your reply.

I used the stuff from Halfords, by the way I found the fibre mat supplied with the kit a bit heavy, so I went for the tissue. Used P38 as filler. Almost finished the sanding – hate that job, and all looks quite ok to me – it´s still my first build, so aim is not too high.

I bought some filler primer which I intend to use before the red and grey primer, is that the way to go?

Niels Depends how you want to finish your boat… spray aerosols, or tin type paint.

If using spray cans.. my advice is keep to the same manufacturer and type of paint, ie acrylic or whatever.

Filler primer is great stuff if using a gun, quite thick and useful for filling smaller marks and pinholes. Spray can stuff, not so useful. Dust existing surface with a white or grey primer and VERY LIGHTLY rub down to see how bad (or good) the surface is, and go from there…ie another thin scrape of p38, or just a bit more paint and rubbing down, and applying one colour of undercoat.

OR use ordinary undercoat…Dulux etc..this is thick and a few coats will fill quite well. You will then have to use Humbrol enamel or an "ordinary" oil based paint on top. I have found that Humbrol enamel, if left to harden for a few weeks, will take wet and dry paper rubbing down to produce a glassy surface, finish with T-cut or similar.

                                          Thank´s Ashley,

I am not the most patient man on earth, so already sprayed the filler stuff. You are right – not much filling, just another primer. I will now give it a light rub, and then maybe I will need a little more of P38 – great stuff by the way – before the primer.

It´s not looking too bad, and as it´s a work boat I am building Im not looking for a superb high gloss finish.

                                          Niels
