        Hello.

I am building a model of the Steam tug “Lady Cecilia” of the Erith & Dartford Lighterage Co. I am working from very limited plans and could really use more information and or drawings on how the folding funnels worked. It can be hard finding information on British boats here in Canada so thanks in advance for any help.

james, I have a very old first edition book Scale model Ships by Reeve and Homa, which shows a diagramn of a folding funnel……if you pm me your email address I'll scan the diagramn for you…..a single photo is worth a thousand words.

              James,

I dont know if this helps or is representative of Lady Cecilia but TID 164 which is preserved in Chatham has a folding funnel. I took some photos a few years ago and you can just about work out the principle of operation. There is a central hinge point and two arms with counterweights, one on either side. The line of the joint between upper and lower parts of the funnel is horizontal at the front but curved up at the back to allow the funnel to fold back without fouling.

That's quite an ingenious hinge mechanism!

it took me some time to understand how it worked!

A picture is indeed, worth a thousand words!
