Paul has been nagging me to put some pictures of my own models up so here they are. It’s not a complete collection as I still have a lot of old prints to go through. I think he wondered if I actually did build models…

Beautiful work, Colin, I’m extremely impressed and very envious. You must have been a child prodigy when you built the early ones.

I just noticed 2 pics o f  “Brenda” on your model pics, which incidently are fantastic. Do you have any more pics or  a build system for the model. I have just got started on the hull for the same ship. I have also just sent for the plans of the RAF seaplane tender

                  Tony,

I started this model many years ago before I took a break to do some full size sailing. Consequently it just sat around for years although I’m determined to try and finish it this winter. All the running gear, motors and R/C are up and running and essentially I just need to add the fittings to the topsides. How hard can it be?!

The basic construction is a plywood framework with balsa planking finished off with gummed paper strip. Co incidentally I recently found some photos of some of the early build stages which I will put up as an Album. It may not be until after the weekend though as we are just off for a short break tomorrow morning.

I was able to find out very little other information about the ship other than what was in the original Model Boats article although I did exchange some correspondence with one of her former captains. I’m very happy to share any of this with you.

I was attracted to the ship because of her graceful appearance – there doesn’t seem to be a straight line in her which does makes for some interesting modelling!

                    Thanks for that colin.
I also think its a beautiful ship and can`t wait to get stuck into it . I did manage to get some pictures of her from glasgow university but they are in black white and dont show much of the superstructure. The covered in sides on the ship were originally open with just pillers up so it must have been refitted later on. I can send copies of the pics if they would be any good to you. I have bult the hull to deck level and have used lime planks. I would appreciate any help you can offer me

Can anyone tell when the info about the Scottish Fishing Protection vessel ” BRENDA” was in Model Boats. Hope you can help.

The article on Brenda was in the October 1977 issue although, to be honest, apart from the plan, there wasn’t a great deal of use to the model maker as most of the text was background about the Scottish Fishery Protection Service. The illustrations were not very clear either and added nothing to what is already on the plan. I can’t find my copy at the moment. if I do I will scan the relevant pages in. But they won’t be very helpful.

You did say you might be able to post some more pics of your early build of Brenda. Sorry to be a pain

                            Hi Tony,

I did post them and sent you a couple of messages on 6th November!

Had to get in on your SHANKLIN, mine is 60inch long and appears as PRINCE IVANHOE.
A sad end to a lovely vessel, wrecked on the Gower peninsula in 1982

                                Sandy,

That’s a really beautiful piece of work, you must be very proud of her. I liked all the Denny motorships and Shanklin was my favourite. I still have the newspaper reports of her grounding, really painful. But she saved all her people and  everybody got off OK except that one man suffered a fatal heart attack on the beach.

Have you got the book “Shanklin, Ill Fated Prince” by Alan Brown which includes a graphic description of her final moments?

Photo below shows Brading near the end of her service – taken from Ryde Pier.

Are you building at the moment or are you to busy running around the south coast and writing?

                                    Hello Paul,

Good to have you posting again. I hope things have improved a bit for you.

At the moment I am tinkering with my partially built model of the Blue Star liner Almeda at 1:150 scale – photo of original below. But yes, I am pretty busy with other things at the moment.

In August we visited Vancouver and they had a ‘Wooden Boat Show’ on at the Granville Market wharf. You would have loved it, everything from a steam powered tug to a dinghy fitted with a steam plant. In the middle lots of ‘Gentlemen’s Launches’ with acres of varnish plus a beautiful classic Chris Craft.

Paul Freshney has agreed to run a photo feature but it won’t appear until sometime in the New Year.
