So, imagine I visit the Dortmund show this year. I purchase many things from the traders. Do I have to declare my purchases upon my return and be presented with Import Duty and VAT charges ?

If you bring the items back with you then you should be OK. See:

Last time I checked you were OK up to £390. If you went above that you lost the £390 allowance and paid taxed on the total value.

If you buy "many things" the £390 might not seem that much.

You should be aware that you might not need to pay German sales tax as a non EU resident. If you can do this then the saving on German VAT should nearly pay any UK VAT.

The £390 is for goods ordered from the EU and delivered to the UK. If you bring the items with you for personal use then there is no limit. That's the way the regulations seem to read.

Just buy another seat on the plane for that lathe….

Correction, the £390 does apply as Chris E says.

Sorry but I believe that you are wrong. The £390 VAT & duty free is for goods that you physically bring back with you into the UK.

Yes Chris, on rechecking I see you are right!
