I sailed in one with similar accommodation, completed only 15 years after Baron Vernon.. I can't say that I was unhappy. The food was awful, the accommodation poor, and it was hot & sweaty, but I was only 21 years old, and it was all something of an adventure – Liverpool – London – Madeira – Luanda – Lobito – Walvis Bay – Durban – Cape Town – Dakar – Marseilles – Bremerhaven – Bremen – Hamburg and River Blackwater – I had no worries, and was getting £21 a week (1965). I had already been at sea for four years, and had 27 more left to run. A Cinderella profession, but I would do it all again if I was leaving school again back in 1959 – I was proud to be a merchant seaman and proud of my my brass buttons, and a pocketful of money when I paid off.
