Very nice Bob and thanks for illustraing your build. These 'classic' tranps were very much designed on a 'form follows function' basis. High foc'sl for seakeeping, full lines for maximum cargo stowage on the length, economical machinery plant and everything else only there because it needs to be. Even the crew were cheap!

                Thanks Colin,

Yes, they were strictly utility. If they had only improved the accommodation for officers and crews, things would have been a lot better. Some of these ships were still trading in the 60s, and 70s, I saw the wreck of Adelfotis II (ex Baron Stranraer) at South Shields in 1962. (Steering gear failure when going into port!) She was almost identical to Baron Vernon

They may have been utility and not nice to work on but that still looks like a "proper" cargo boat to me.

                  Very very nice.

I sailed in one with similar accommodation, completed only 15 years after Baron Vernon.. I can't say that I was unhappy. The food was awful, the accommodation poor, and it was hot & sweaty, but I was only 21 years old, and it was all something of an adventure – Liverpool – London – Madeira – Luanda – Lobito – Walvis Bay – Durban – Cape Town – Dakar – Marseilles – Bremerhaven – Bremen – Hamburg and River Blackwater – I had no worries, and was getting £21 a week (1965). I had already been at sea for four years, and had 27 more left to run. A Cinderella profession, but I would do it all again if I was leaving school again back in 1959 – I was proud to be a merchant seaman and proud of my my brass buttons, and a pocketful of money when I paid off. My shipmates and I in Portsmouth in 1982, when about to sail "south" to join the Task Force – I am standing on the extreme right –

Very nicely done, I really enjoyed following your build over the past three months. It was an encouraging build thread, showing how each small step gets you to a beautiful finished model.

Thanks – Not a very complicated model, but I am glad that it is complete, as it dragged out for so long.
