        Hi All,

My Dad has a bespoke 6ft scale model of WWII HMS Diamond and would like to give it a new home (for free) rather than just send it to the dump.

It is in need of some TLC as it has been sat in the house or garage for many years.

Please get in touch if you are interested or have any questions.

        Many thanks,

        Jason

Hi Jason, it would help if you gave the location of the model.

          Regards

            Hi Jason,

Very nice destroyer, it would be good if you asked for a donation to be made to the RNLI then it goes to good cause as well as a new home, those are expensive motors 😀

            Regards Ray

              Roger,

Sorry, yes, I should have stated the location.

Heston, in the London Borough of Hounslow, but I'm prepared to drive a little to drop off if it helps.

p.s. Liking the profile pic! smiley

              Ray,

Yes please, if anyone wants to make a donation to the RNLI when taking this boat, I'm sure the RNLI and my dad would very much appreciate it.

              Regards to both,

              Jason

Hi Jason. I am not that far from Heston (Hampton Court), and although I like the idea of it, it is not something I would specifically want.

However, the thought of dumping it is too much to bear really, and on the off-chance that you get no takers I would be willing to take care of it and do some light restoration before deciding what exactly to do with it, all assuming you just need to be rid of it.

Likely we can easily get it running and there might be a chance for you to see it cruising around the pond at Bushy Park.

This is all assuming you get no takers after a while.

I am amazed that no one as yet has jumped at the chance…………..it is a lovely looking model, and well detailed.

Not my kind of model, as unfortunately where I sail on Fleetwood's salt water lake, which is as rough as the proverbial dogs bum it would be sunk in minutes………….

but c'mon people, a wonderful offer and a chance to own a lovely model whilse making a decent contribution to the RNLI.

Thank you Ashley, that is a kind offer. You are currently the front runner and I'm sure my dad would love to see it on the water again.

I'll wait a few more days to see if anyone else is interested.

If it helps to convince anyone, I will gladly match the taker's donation to the RNLI up to max. £100.

                        Regards,

Yes, must be someone who wants it.

it is just too big to contemplate keeping personally, unfortunately.

                          Give it a few weeks.

I would take it and snatch Jasons hands off at the same time, easily worth £100 donation, but its to far away to collect. I had even thought of getting a courier to pick it up but the packaging would be a nightmare.

I have taken delivery of said vessel, and it is a bit big.

Overall, it’s in pretty good nick.

Hull appears to be bread-and-butter with ply uppers, and although the grey bits are fine, the lower red bits have so serious splits, but nothing that a bit of filler and a fibreglass sheath wont fix. Flat bottom.

Internally it’s a bit of a mess. There is a servo and a pair of switches which I am taking to be the “speed controller”…a simple back-off-forward affair, with a second servo for the rudders. The mono perm (?) motors are very rusty and have loads of either resistors and/or capacitors on them and turn if a bit stiffly but could be just the gearing.

Railings all ok, a bonus and there are some nice fittings there. Masts shot, and I will probably make new de-mountable ones.

I have given it a cursory clean and it looks better already! It is a bit of a weight but not unmanageable.

As promised, I have made a £50 donation to the RNLI.

Good luck fixing it up! I hope we get to see it speeding over the water some day!

If those motors have gearbox's they are Marx Decaperms or the bigger Hecterperms ?

My first Decaperm in the late 60's cost £3-8-00 = 68 shillings? A lot of pocket money 😀

The internals need removing, so I will measure up the motors etc. Likely the gears will need rgreasing.

The shafts are doubtless 2ba, and are fitted with weedy red three blade plastic props, however i have a pair of 50mm brass three blade l&r handed ones which would look nice.

Also included three dinky see-through Ripmax 6v 4Ah batteries, not gel cells, but real lead-acid ones!! One has been used but the others are new. £3.75 on the ticket!

                                        Pictures to follow.

Although the upper works will be repaired, I dont think it will look much different to how it does, as I will not be doing any repainting. The paint is generally in good order, but faded from age, and I will not be able to match that.

I used to have some of those old mini lead acid batteries. They'd fizzaway for ages when charging and then deliver hardly any power. Limited lifetime too.

Made some Dexion brackets (easy as shelf supports are Dexion) and the boat is sitting quite nicely out of the way, and accessible for repairs, a result, and safer that hanging on a wall or dangling from the rafters.

Love those motors, little bit of surface rust, bet they run ok, no need for those suppressor etc these days, I'd turn them round and use the geared output, major torque for your 50mm props😎

Topside washed down and looks better already! Probably needs one or two more goes.

Inside stripped. Motors work ok, one makes….brushy?? geary?? noises….going one way, but seems ok the other way. Will be careful when putting them back to match the rotation of prop and motor.. The cases will wire wool and varnish to look like the standard sort of plated black finish.

The MacGregor set works, or at least, one servo sort of turns and the other cant quite, but it should work ok once I get a new receiver battery box, one of those plastic 4x AA holders. The original has three wires and is set up to work as a pair of AA`s, and one single?? It has connectors unlike the modern `standard` servo plugs, and as it is a bit of a collectors item I don`t want to cut these off, so will go for a new servo/esc/receiver.

Propshafts out. Nothing wrong with them other than the tubes were filled with a really sticky black grease and were actually stiff to pull out! They need cleaning out somehow. Servo for some reason was sited way forward, and had a really long thin and unsupported rod. As it has ends on it and there`s nowt much wrong with it I may re use in conjunction with a bit of plastic `snake` sleeve for support. OR I may move the servo quite a bit further forward seeing as I have cut out the old (balsa) servo mounts.

Hi Ashley, I've just had the same problem as you with a propshaft tube full of black sticky grease. I cleared it by standing the boat (Model Slipway Conserver) on it's stern and pouring about a half cup of white spirit through the tube. I caught the outflow in a small container and put it back through the tube for a second wash. It seems to have done the trick as putting the shaft through doesn't force any more gunge out and the shaft is now free to turn.

Your model is somewhat longer than Conserver so you might have to use some flexible tube to connect to the shaft tubes to do the wash through with your model horizontal. White spirit seems a pretty good solvent for shifting greasy and oily muck, and is relatively benign to cured painted surfaces.

                                                    Keith

Cheers Keith. I will probably try the tube/white spirit thing.

The actual shafts were in perfect condition with not a spot of rust, and have been blackened by some process. I have a pair of 45mm 4mm thread three blade brass props (handed) that will go on nicely.

At the moment, on its side, it looks a right mess. Stripping in progress, one side at a time. I have had to go up the grey bit after all as there are cracks just above the waterline where the thin ply joins the solid base. I think it may mean that my fibreglasscover will have to go just above the waterline, and I make the boot-topping wider than it was so that the glass covers these splits.

At the bow I need a large scrape of filler to smooth over the transition again between bottom, ply and plank nose.

It is a shame I cannot turn it over but I darent bugger up the railings, which are all in good condition barring the ends.

                                                      Ashley
