Hi Alun, I'm suprised you havn't had a reply. If no one on here wants that rather nice motor, they can fetch a decent price on fleebay.

Help and advice are free on here, so tell us what kind of motor you are setting up and any problems you are having. If you would like to tell us what part of the country you are in there may be a club near you.

            Charles.

Hi Charles sorry about the delay in getting back have been very busy with the kids ,I have a sea queen running on 12 volts and a 65mm brass prop the motor came with this kit so don't really no a lot about it was hoping to put in a mfa850 torpedo motor to give it a little bit more umph as it were , I had this motor in my other sea queen but the speed controller kept stopping all the time , the esc I have is a aqua power 280a water cooled thingy which was sold to me by the same shop as I bought the motor from after being told it was the perfect match

              many thanks alun

Alun. A 65mm prop is a bit big for an ungeared 850 motor. I would use the MFA gearbox to drive a 65mm prop. This motor is not that juicy, and a 40A ESc should be fine when geared. I would be wary of such a high powered ESc as quoted, the wires alone would struggle to handle that sort of current.

I might go to a 55mm prop direct on an 850 at the most. How big is your sea queen? Loads of people have built one so there is a dearth of knowledge to advise on this subject..Not me `coz I have not got one!

Hi again Alun, I agree with Ashley about the 850 and the prop size. I would use a 50 or 55 with this motor on direct drive. Your speed controler was probably cutting out because there was too high an ampage drain being drawn from it.

I know there are quite a few people using 850s with the Sea Queen, but you need to keep the weight down, 46" is a lot of boat to get moving. Nicads will be lighter than a lead acid battery and handle the current better.

Brushless is a possibility but you need someone better than me to advise on them.

You might enjoy looking at Fleetwoods model power boat clubs web page, they have just had a vintage day and there are some great pics, including some sea queens going rather quickly.

Alun. I should think the geared motor will not be drawing much more, if any, than it would driving an X50 prop (what MFA issue with their kits) approx 10-11A. A 25A speed controller would be ok..however it will need some ventilation..a bit of air across it..

It should go ok but an 850 but it is not a particularly "hot" motor. I can never remember what others reccomend, various 700`s on more than 12V and so on. Depends how fast you want to go.

In theory, the 850 puts out double and 800..and my Fantome, also at 48" goes quite nicely with two 800`s so in theory yours should go just as well.. Whether or not the increased efficiency of a larger prop would make any difference??

I would start with the 850 direct on to an X50 prop, mounted with screws so you can easily take the mount out, and see what you think..go from there. Use a 5mm shaft as well (if not already in place). there will be loads of room to try other things if not satisfied with the performance. As charles suggests, a 12V Nimh pack of as large a capacity as you can afford will be the best bet.

Can the 850 motor run on twenty four volts or is it only safe to run on 12 volts ??

                          I wouldn't recommend it.
Ref Chinese speed controllers, my rule-of-thumb is to divide the stated/claimed continuous current capabilty by a factor of at least five. The higher the claimed value the higher the exaggeration factor. The 850 can draw much more than 11A on load, even on 12v. That's real Amps, not Chinese ones.
