      Dear All

This March Issue of MB Magazine is packed with torpedo and missile boats and makes for great reading but the best part is Ron Rees article on his tug Rhondda.

Rons article is very well written and contains lots of useful and interesting build information, there is even a third use for ladies tights.

This month instead of just looking at the pictures take the time to actually read the magazine.

Paul. You mean to say there is WRITING in the mag as well as pictures????

          Well I never.

Not many people have noticed but the writing is the squiggly black stuff between the pictures.

I don't know! Is Model Boats keeping me under surveillance?

This is part of the next EeZeBilt offering coming off the stocks – somewhat delayed as I've been bringing an old Macgregor single-channel (remember that?) transmitter back to life – and what do I see in the March edition? A piece on OSA 2s!

              I ask you!!!

                          Hi Paul,

It's nice to know at least one person enjoyed the article on Rhondda, thanks a lot. It really turned out to be a lovely model and while the article says it was £25 to build, it was actually £18.90!!….better than £300 plus for a kit anyway. I,ve made a barge for it to pull for this season but that is conventional balsa and ply, from somebody else's free plan. I hope you enjoy part 2 in the April edition, Let us know how you get on if you fancy building one, Mine took me 6 weeks, start to finish!!

                          Regards……….Ron Rees.

                            Hello Ron

I did enjoy reading the first part of your article and looking forward to reading part two, the article is very well written and kept my interest all the way through,I have to admit that I have never used blue foam to build a boat and find the process very interesting.

Like you I find all sorts of bits at B&Q and the Pound shops….isn't it amazing how many mundane items can be re-used as something else.

I especially liked your wheelhouse I did a very similar thing on a TID only I used real oak and had a lot of trouble working the tiny joints, if only I had thought of coffee stirrers.

At some point during the summer I might have a go at building Rhondda with my grandson (he is keen to have a tug of his own) but it would have to be scaled up to about 40in long.

Have you any other articles in the pipeline?

                            All the best

                            Paul

                              Hello again Ron

Part 2 of your article is just as good as part 1

I certainly can sympathise with your masking marathon and I often worry that, after all that work, the paint stays in the right place and hasn't developed 'spider legs' where the tape wasn't stuck.

The finished model looks lovely and sits in the water very well.

I still plan to try and build a 40in version this summer.

                              Paul

                                Hi Paul,

Thanks again for the nice comments. A bit of a blank few months in MB mag coming up as all my building seems to be centered around mechanical bits and pieces. (A bit like the Outboard motor I did in the Winter special)

Having read a lot on other forums, the question of Bow Thrusters and how to make them keeps coming up. So I have been designing a home made version, Twin rotors in one housing and brushless power!. Tests have been good and its powerful despite its apparent small size. Also been working on a new Racer model for club fun competitions and 'Have-a-go' boats for spectators. Hopefully get a few more youngsters involved in our branch of modelling. The new boat has been tested and goes well with only a few niggly design changes left to do. I can't say much as it will spoil the mag article, if it gets published OK. but its only 5 components!! and a 2 hour build, that should wet your appetite. This bit of Ron Rees madness also needed a look at making Vacuum Formers, so home-made plastic hulls and 'stuff' on the way.

All secret squirrel at the moment but good fun. Hope you have a go at Rhonnda, she's been out several times already this season. There's not a lot in the article on the keel weights needed or how to do it, It couldn't go in because of safety reasons and melting lead and pouring into a mold. With your planned scaled up version I should be looking at the local Church Roof if I were you!!!.

                                Cheers and happy boating.

                                Ron.

PS I think I answered your posts online, not sure now, if I didn't then sorry for the delay.

                                  Hello Ron

Your bow thruster sounds like a great piece of kit and a powerful unit could be invaluable in a larger model, have you any way of measuring the thrust?

A vac formed hull is something I have been musing over so I am very keen to see your approach and methodology but don't worry about any competition as my interest isn't in anything as complex as plastic as I am just playing around with carbon fibre.

I agree with you about avoiding the discussion on the melting and casting of lead, the world is full of numpties and you don't want their first degree burns on your conscience. On a good note I've already stripped both of the local churches and the libraries so I've just about got enough code 4 to ballast a battleship.

How about some more photos of Rhonnda in the water.

I have had a few things vacuum moulded and will be interested to see a home made moulder. A small one would be very useful, but one of my projects used a machine able to form 600×900 sized sheets and this, as a home made machine would be very big to store and unless you used it often….?
