Some preliminary thought is being given to the possibility of another Model Boats Special issue for 2015.

In the past we have had the 60th Anniversary issue, A Construction Special, a Plans Feature Special, World of Model Boating Special and this year a Warship Special, all of which have been well received by readers.

The idea of the Specials is to include items which are a little different to the mainstream content of the regular issues of Model Boats but still of great interest to model boaters which is why we have previously featured some classic articles from the past with which current readers may be unfamiliar together with articles on subjects which are presently niche interest but which could well catch people's imagination.

What will actually appear will be subject to various constraints according to what is available and the budget for the Special issue but I am inviting suggestions from Forum members as to the sort of content they would like to see in a future issue.

All suggestions will be carefully considered but I cannot guarantee that they will find their way into the published issue!

I look forward to hearing from you.

      Colin

With the rise in popularity of plastic kits, strain on household budgets, a lack of storage space, loss of workshops, internet ordering (very few model shops) etc, could the special (or part of) cover plastic kit conversions to r/c.

          Just a thought,

          Tony.

            Hi Colin

Isn't it the editors prerogative to come up with amazing new slants on an old subject laugh

How about setting a challenge to design and build a model from a standard list of materials, entry by photos of the completed and floating model and judged by yourself. The photos could be displayed on the forum so that everyone could see what the other contestants had built…………..perhaps a prize from Dremel?

The whole event could even work up into a follow up article for the main mag.

How about an Issue with sources to purchase hardwear .Remembering not all forum members are aware where to purchase their needs

Thinking what types of motors and where to buy(suppliers invited to contribute at a price bringing in needed income)

              Types of props and shafts

              Balsa suppliers

Ply (not all suitable for our builds)

Batteries -brushed and brushless -matching batteries to Props

There are people with all of the above knowledge and more than willing to offer advice but there are as many more who read the magazine who do not read the forum .Maybe a reference magazine would help our readers.laughMichael

How about some space given over to the use we put our boats to, Charity or being silly towing dingys etc, also there are a lot of questions about paint and finishing, could do an article using rattle cans rather than airbrush, (cost)

What about a new sheet of Model boat stickers???? my old ones have had it

I've been thinking about this suggestion for a while now so this seems like an ideal opportunity to float the idea (pun intended).

In my flying days when I subscribed to RCM&E there used to be a monthly feature which covered tricks, tips, shortcuts and good ideas that readers had used in their building and mostly they were really useful and I'm pretty sure there is a huge wealth of such ideas among the boat building fraternity and even if it not taken up for the special issue, maybe it's something for the future.

Thanks for the ideas so far, keep them coming. However do bear in mind that the Special can't be too 'special' as it has to appeal to enough readers to make it commercially viable. It is a Special in the sense that it exists outside the usual run of issue of the magazine and it can cover some less common topics provided that there is sufficient variety to attract a wide range of readers. For example while you can sell a Warship Special as was the case this year, a Hovercraft Special would be too much of a niche interest (and probably impossible to get enough material for anyway!)

Some of the subjects mentioned above have already been covered in either recent Specials or in the main magazine such as painting techniques and listing suppliers of boat modelling products.

A 'Plastic Magic' project, converting the conversion of a plastic kit to R/C would certainly be a runner provided it hasn't already been done previously. I have a part built Queen Mary 2 under construction at the moment but not sure if that would be finished in the projected timescale which envisages an on sale date of next April. Any suggestions on this would be welcome.

Hits and Tips are always useful but again this has been extensively covered in Glynn Guest's Mooring Post articles plus of course this sort of material has tended to migrate to the internet forums these days.

Not easy to find a new theme is it? And then of course you have to find somebody to provide the required material in a form suitable for publication and while there are still quite a few model boaters out there, not many of them want or are able to get involved in writing about them. We can only publish what people write!

Another thought springs to mind – A quick to the water special, featuring RTR and ARTR models (inc. yachts). Would be an opportunity to get beginners swiftly on the water and give the modelling trade a chance to advertise some of their products.

What about technology in model boats? Some examples:

                              – use of 2D drawing programs to create files for laser cutting.

                              – using a die cut printer to cut parts out of sheet styrene.

                              -3D printing

                              – use of simple IC chips to automate functions

                              – what's going on in the world of robotic boats.

                              – Adapting FPV systems for model boat use.

I have inside knowledge on this topic, and know Colin has opted for a special on steam, focussing on the little used but very efficient pop-pop type engine.

Paul is designing a 6 foot carbon fibre special with a one inch bore stainless steel engine fired by a 3Kw camping gaz burner and incorporating pre-heat for the separate intake nozzles (now there`s a great mod!!), Bob is going to convert his G.E to pop-pop power using the jet thrust to spin the side paddles and I shall be examining how such an engine can be made from a special man-made board, impregnated with a nano-glass fibre resin and using watercooling on the exhaust.. have not finalised the hull but favour a surface piercing design.

Someone mentioned a pop-pop "K" class sub, with steam powered diving operation but I think that might be a bit fanciful, myself.

Having some trouble with the camping gaz as a power source as cant get sufficient flow for the burners so switching to acetylene and liquid oxygen……of course this means the preheating will have to be done by electric arc so I am incorporating an inverter to supply the power for the arc, the inverter will be run from four subatomic C cells. This set up will eventually allow a conversion to a relativity drive, which will be really good, as the boat will arrive before it sets off……this method of travel opens fantastic opportunities for trips to the pub as you can be drunk before you set off and avoid the nasty problem of having to pay for your beer.

Cor. I cant wait to see what Bob has come up with. Bob`s craft problaby arrives just as its time to pay.

Is this a 30 page thesis in the special ?? I know mine runs to a dozen pages or so (without pictures).

I ma also converting my HMS Nelson and making special engines with three exhausts to exit via the turrets, they will fire popcorn kernels..these will puff up in flight due to the being fired by superheated steam, and arrived ready to eat at the pond side (butter flavour, as the barrels will be butter lubricated)

Clearly Ashley and Paul are developing a version of the Special that will exist only in cyberspace…… I'm afraid the reality will not achieve such heights but it will be available in W H Smith!

Re the other suggestions, this year's Special focussed on Warships and there was also a separate bookazine on the Normandy Landings. Dave Wooley has also been chronicling the WW1 RN in the regular issues so warship orientated anniversaries have been well covered of late although we are certainly planning to include an interesting warship anniversary feature.

With regard to technology matters, these are more appropriate for the regular magazine and indeed have been covered to some extent over the last year or two.

As I mentioned earlier, these Specials are something of a balancing act in delivering interesting content on a tight budget and they have to appeal to the current mainstream model boating market.

Next year's issue is now well into the planning process and without giving away anything at this stage, (except that it will NOT contain a master class on hardboard construction), I think that readers will find that the mix will be up to previous year's standards and they sold well so we must be doing something right.

                                      Colin

PS – There is an excellent item on model boat steam in the current 2014 Winter Special edition.

With so many boats appearing on Ebay these days, what about an article on refurbishment of old models, Hull damage and repainting, this could make it a draw for new modellers!!!

                                              Colin,

                                              A couple of thoughts:

Queen Elizabeth/ Prince of Wales Aircraft carrier special/ initial plans. I know it may be a bit premature, but there seems to be so many mock-ups/ CGI that I was hoping someone with a bit more knowhow than myself would be able to produce the first model!

School projects – in keeping with the skimmer projects. Perhaps a couple of small quick projects that could be used to aim at the young teenager who is interested.

Modern technology in models – with the rise of small cameras (GoPro) whether anyone has any thoughts of getting one mounted on a Yacht.

                                              Hope that helps

                                              Good luck!

                                              Dave
