I know this is not model boat related, but it is something of great interest to the Gardening fraternity on the forum?

I planted a Mistletoe seed, a few years ago, under the bark of our Apple tree

      As expected, nothing happened!

I went in the garden this morning, to do a bit of pruning and there it was!

I couldn't believe my eyes…….It had finally sprouted!

      Anybody come across this before?

      Bob

You are obviously not a gardener then, Colin?

There must be some gardeners amongst our fraternity, that can appreciate this minor miracle?

I have not seen this, but apparently it is quite common. ( Article from 2007)

I suppose, that if the birds can do it…..It must be easy…..But you try it!….lol

                    Bob,

well done indeed, now all you need to do is create about 400 more plants across your orchard and you can get into the seasonal business, just like Eddie Grundy and his dad!

That'll sort the wheat from the chaff…….

I'm told it can take more than 20 plantings to get one to take so again, very well done Mr Abell. I'm not sure if we get mistletoe growing wild over here on the Island, I'll have to enquire, I've not seen any and we usually get ours when down on the Cotswalds visiting.

                      Hello Kimmo

I remember now, you are into gardening yourself?

I'm pleased you have commented and aware of the surprise growth…….Many thanks

                        Greetings green fingers,

we have just received this years seeds for the allotment, and soon will have spuds as well so can start 'chitting'. The garlic, onions and cauliflower were over wintered in the greenhouse and we still have loads of leeks, cabbage, spuds and 'petty pow' (sprouts like miniature cabbage shape) on site.

Digging was all done before Christmas, so just the bean trench to back fill and we'll be ready for the warm weather!

Still can't find any reference to mistletoe being native over here.

                        Keep on building, aye, Kim

                            Hello Kimmo

Looking at a Mistletoe website, my crop could be about three years old and is quite poisonous

There are two types of Mistletoe…..American and European……..So there should be some in the IOM

Rumour has it that the Vikings consumed the entire stock of Mistletoe in the IOM!…..They used it, to repair their Longboats, when the PVA ran out!

We`ve still got potatoes in the greenhouse too…..Planted them ( Charlotte ) in September for Christmas dinner

                            All the best Kimmo

                            Bob

Help!! – what is causing all this moss to grow in my front lawn. Other than annual weed feed and mosskiller, is there some thing which will sort it for longer periods (or permanently)?

                                Peter, hello,

we have problems with blight almost every year, so try the resistant varieties. We grow first and second earlys, letting the main crop be from the commercial growers if we run short, and then we put in late spuds for Christmas too, which we are still digging now.

Lady Crystl, casablanca, cara, orla, vivaldi and red duke of york have been grown over the last few years and this year its to be Lady crystal, orla and Sarpo red (blight resistant and good slug resistance too, from E Europe).

My wife is the vegetable manager, I'm merely handy with fork and spade and fixing the fences and compost bins etc.

                                Cheers, Kim

PS Bob apparently mistletoe has been found growing wild in the hedge rows above Kirk Michael here on the Island.

I`ve never seen Mistletoe growing anywhere…..Must try harder?

You were very lucky to get it to grow, I tried a similar think with a 380 motor, speed controller , servos, put it near some balsa and glue, but 5 years later on it has not grafted in at all !! laugh

                                          Hello Michael

Necessity is the Mother of Invention, so they say

I needed to water the tiny Cactus plant, with a bit of finesse!

So the Skniflint Can was born

Don't know how I do it for the money!

Well done on the Mistletoe Bob. I have tried a couple of times on my apple tree but nothing happened. I thought maybe the seed needed to pass through a bird first but obviously not.

                                              Hello Dave

Now`s the time to try again…..That`s if you can find some berries!

The experts say to use the thin branches, about 1/2" dia ………..Not where I`ve tried it, low down

They also say, remove as much of the sticky stuff as possible

                                              Best of luck
