You make think this thread is slightly out of order?……..But it isn't really!

Most model boat enthusiasts are all over the age of sixty!

It's a medically known fact that at the age of sixty, seven out of ten men are suffering from a Prostate gland problem!….Yes! 7 out of 10!….and that's a lot!

If you feel you may have a water problem…..Then visit your doctor right away

No need to panic, but be a brave soldier and be sensible

      All the best chaps……….Bob

As it is a water related post I consider it to be fair game.

A member of my band is an MRI scanner ish type person, and when there was an article about this very thing some time ago I said perhaps everyone should have a scan he said that possibly wasn`t such a good idea as almost everyone will have something wrong in this department, and mostly it never develops into anything, but.. what to do??

            Ashley

Your bandsman is quite correct there.

But the sensible thing is to let the Doctor decide what treatment is required….If any!

To settle people's peace of mind ……Surgery is the last option

I only wish, that I had read a similar thread…..Two years ago!

C'mon chaps!……Bite the bullet and face the music!……..Bob

Men tend to shy away from discussing this sort of medical issue – not seen as "manly" or "too embarrassing". However ignorance or "head in sand" is a dangerous/risky thing when it comes to prostate cancer. I have had several routine "inspections" and PSA blood tests – not pleasant but important for older men. However I do concur with Ashley's point – my previous doctor (he retired in 2010) was unconvinced that the current tests are very effective and many disorders of the prostate just rumble on without ever causing a serious problem. Nevertheless, if someone has the (well publicised) symptoms he must see his doctor – it might be nothing more than an infection or an enlarged prostate but let the doctor decide whether further investigation is needed.

Your GP can arrange a blood test to indicate the likelihood of any problems. There is also a simple physical check for prostate enlargement which will make your eyes water – 'the fickle finger of fate'!

I'm quite happy to give space to something which, as Bob very rightly points out, could be a life saver to a lot of people. Most of us modellers aren't getting any younger.

Ian and Colin….You have both made an excellent contribution to this thread!

I know exactly what you you mean when you refer to the fickle finger of fate.! I enjoyed a hearty laugh !

My first frantic visit to the Doc, was dealt with by a young Locum Lady doctor, but, what the hell? These were desperate times!

                  Or so I thought!

I am so glad that this subject has been brought into the daylight!

The real need to see the Doctor is to ensure that the problem has not escalated!

                    Bob,

I have known quite a few people who have tested positive for prostate cancer and in all cases it has either been effectively cured or otherwise controlled to the extent that they are likely to succumb to something else or old age well before it becomes critical.

The important thing, as Ian says, is not to stand on your dignity – get it checked out!

Gosh Bob, I wish I'd had a lady doctor, apparently you can pay a lot of money for that sort of treatment! I'm envious.

It just shows one, that most men…..me included, are totally unaware of the problem!

Apparently, the problem is not all that serious….but delaying medical treatment surely is!

                      Good luck chaps……..Bob

I became a bit concerened with my nocturnal waterworks a while back so I went to see the GP. He gave me a routine PSA blood test and what Bob calls the Fickle Finger of Fate. He then sent me to the local NHS Urology Dept for a biopsy (now that did hurt a bit!) and I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, at the age of 57.
As it was in a very early stage I was offered several treatments, one of which was actually "b****r off and come back in a year"! I chose brachytherapy, which involved the insertion of 80 tiny radioactive implants under a general anaesthetic and a couple of nights in Leeds St James' Bexley Wing – a wonderful place. My PSA count has since fallen to below 0.5 – normal is anywhere between 1 and 3, depending on your body type. My teatment since the "procedure" has amounted to no more than a routine blood test and a phone call from the consultant every six months. If all goes as it should then I shall be considered to be fully cured in six months' time.
The most painful experience of the whole affair was the embarrassment of waking up from the GA and being introduced (for the first time) to a very attractive young lady who told me she had been responsible for conducting the operation – what an introduction she must have had to me two and a half hours before!!
BTW I still make four or five trips down the landing every night, but I don't worry about it any more.

                          Hope this helps someone.

                            Thanks for your contribution, Dave

I remember the Biopsy well and all the scans etc, but now, only a distant memory! I do remember , how kind and considerate, the Doctors and nurses were, however

Now on a pill a day and a special injected pill that lasts for 12 weeks in the tummy wall

Next month starts the Radio Therapt for 20 consecutive days….and then it's Bob's your Uncle!

It may sound all very unpleasant, but it' been well worth it!

I'm now thinking of building another model boat, such is my new frame of mind!

                            All the best, chaps…….Bob

                              Hi Guys

It seems very coincidental after a week of not logging on to the site, due to accomodating my brother-in-law, that this subject is being discussed.

I offered accomodation to the B-I-L so he was able to attend Addinbrooks Hospital (he lives in the Lake District) where he underwent 'Robotic surgery' for Prostate cancer. This involved one day in Hosp. for treatment, followed by six days with a 'bag' at my home near the hosp. A further visit to have it removed then drive home to the Lakes. He was the 1004 th person to be treated this way at Addenbrooks, one of two of these facilities in England

One of his options early in diagnoses was as Dave's "come back when its worse".

I concur if you think there's a problem get help,

                              Tom

                                Hi all,

This is a good subject to speak about ,at the moment I am just getting over a massive urinary infection that threatened my kidneys, but prior to this I had most of the symptoms of prostate trouble which i mentioned to the female doc.treating me who did the routine finger test and said it felt ok,last week feeling no better not passing water properly I saw a male doc.at the surgery who did the same test and said one side was enlarged given tablets to relieve that situation and go back for a PSA blood test next week, but what I do know a great worry has been taken off my mind, and would urge anyone with any of the prostate symptoms the visit the doc it gives reassurance and could save your life.I lost a friend some years back because he ignored it for to long

                                Ray

May I add my tuppence worth when i was working as a security guard in a small tesco store i had the misfortune to take a tumble with a shoplifter one night and crack a couple of ribs , yes it bloody hurt but not as much as my pride as the lifter got away with 2 botles of cider , Any way they took me off in the ambulance and tested my blood and i found out i was a type 2 diabetic so that on top of my sleep apenea really went down well . So what i am sayimng is guys , and girls , if you find yourself drinking gallons and wearing a hole in the carpet to the loo see your GP . This awful illness can affect your eyes feet and legs and may lead to gangrene and the loss of limbs . So as many others have aiod se your GP befiore it's to late ,

I am on the last couple of weeks of Radio Therapy, which amounts to 15 mins under a painless radio beam per day for 19 consecutive days

Suppose that sounds horrendous, but it`s quite the opposite, we actually enjoy going! We meet people with similar problems and the nursing staff are so kind and the treatment is no problem at all

Then I should be clear!……..It`s been a hectic few months of activity, but it`s been worth it and I am so relieved!

                                    Now chaps!…..What about your goodselves?

Any hint of a waterworks problem……..Just see the Doctor, it will put your mind at rest

Five years have slipped away and I`ve finally been discharged from Christies

I like to think that all the work, Paul and I put in, raising funds at Haydock for Parkinson`s and Christies Charities have contributed to my wellbeing

Your help in bringing the designs to fruition was invaluable and the projects couldn't have been completed without your model building abilities.

I will miss having a stand at Haydock this year so we will have to arrange a specific day and time to meet all of our chums and cram in as much chat as we can.

Its hardly a Rolls Colin but its a cracking car and its huge, I pick it up this week so now we will be able to get out to all those places that we always wanted to visit.

One of our first trips will be to Dovedale in Derbyshire and popping in to see an old friend along the way.
