I have not been actively carrying out any model ship work for months and months now due to various reasons although I have still been subscribing to Model Boats and reading each month, sort of armchair modeling I suppose.
I just became disinterested as if the bug just wore off. I wonder if others have experienced this.
However,  this months issue of MB has sparked a new interest with the HDML plan maybe it is the kick start I needed. I am now studying the plans with a view to making the hull rather than using the plastic one. I will start a new thread in the scratch build section.

One problem that did not help my model ship decline was not having a water to use in Ashford. We have to travel 40mile round trip to either of the excellent clubs such as Moat park. I find this annoying as there is plenty of water around Ashford but what isn’t used by fishing clubs is not available to public.
Anyhow, I am rambling now so will stop. Just to say the bug seems to have bitten me again so will be lurking on this site and sticking my oar in when I feel the need.

Glad you liked the plan Navigator, it’s one of Editor Paul Freshney’s favourites as you may have guessed and he thought it would have a lot of general appeal. These fast service launch designs offer a good blend of scale appearance and on the water performance.

I look forward to seeing the build thread.

            Thanks Colin,
Yes, reading Paul’s article  gave me the impression it was a favourite. I do remember the original publication and am sure I kept it for “Future” information. I am hunting for it now.

Having a water available fairly near is a serious advantage. Our pond is a mere 10 mins drive away.

If it was 40 miles away I just wonder exactly how much boating I would be doing. Especially with all the to-ing and  fro-ing when making unusual items that require an amount of trial (and error) on the water.

It would be a bit of a downer to have an 80 mile round trip and having discovered a fatal flaw in your design!  (or having forgotten your transmitter ….not that that has EVER happened to me, of course).

                  Hi Ashley,
I did say a 40 mile round trip. It may not seem much but 20 miles each way still costs money and as you say if you want to carry out a quick trials other than those that can be done in the bath or  fish pond it is not ideal. Still it should not really stop me from building models. I have often thought about building small static models as an alternative.

                    Hi Colin,

Thanks I have seen it. Rather clever. What a great idea.
I have located what I was looking for. It is not the original. What I have is the article printed in Sept/Oct 1993 of Radio Control Boat Modeller . I do have the first page missing but sure it is in my filing system still.

                    Dave.

Dave, yes my mistake misreading the mileage. Still…..a 40 mile round trip is still a bit of a trot.

Static models would be ok if you have somewhere to display them, as thats the only use of them once its made….?

On that point, how many modellers have their r/c boats on display (other than in the workshop) ?   I have the Sunderland perched on top of our display cabinet, but its only stayed there because you (the missus) doesnt really notice it and so I get away with keeping it there.

A few boats are in our loft, which is used a lot and so are visible..the rest reside among the spiders in the workshop at the end of the garden.

                        Ashley,

I must admit to like seeing model ships in their element on the water but when seeing Robert Wilson’s models I get ideas of having a small display case with a small fleet on display.

One thing is for sure, she who must be obeyed would not let me get away with having large RC models on display in the living room. She has said she would like a ship model of the sticks and string variety on display so I have got a couple of thoughts on that front.

I have been going the same way of late.   Since completing the RAMON DE LARRINAGA (motor ship), I haven’t done a stroke of modelbuilding!     I removed the ivy from the side of the garage.   I tidied out the attic (awful mess), took loads of junk to the tip.     Repaired two valve radio sets and started on the design of a new one (with valves).
Still no great urge to start another model!

My wife is very tolerant. I have my retired SS Granada fruit ship (40″ long) as pride of place in a big glass case in the living room. On top of the case is a smaller case with a couple of my 1:1250 waterline liners collection and there are two wall mounted glass cases with another 35 liners which I never tire of looking at.

Oh yes, then there are the nautical themed paintings and photos….

Working models are in the garage and my workshop.

Classic ships are works of art in model form in my view.

My wife has the dining area to display her framed needlework and tapestry plus her collection of dolls. We share the stairwell and bedroom.

                            I need some more walls….

Last year was a bad modeling year for me. With the infection in the left leg getting worse and the unbearable pain, I did not go into the workshop much. Imagine trying to build ships when you are on morphine and opium to control pain. Maybe I should have gone into the workshop at the time. I may have built a flower power boat, who knows what wierd creation I may have built.
Once the lower leg was amputated the pain was gone and I regained my health. Amasingly no withdrawl symptoms from the pain cocktails I was on.t then a major setback occurred when I developed bloodclots on the lungs. There were to many and this reduced the blood flow back to the heart and I suffered a major heart attack. This knocked me back serverely and I hardly even went into the workshop and then it was for about an hour or two at the most.
Now I am in there daily for hours on end. THE BUG IS DEFINATELY BACK!

You have certainly had a rough time Bernard and I can only imagine how much you would have been knocked back and am amazed how you have come back. Your posting has helped me to put things into perspective having had some knock backs myself this year.

My younger sister passed away from cancer unexpectedly earlier this year and I have had work related problems. Again I lost interest having to deal with things etc. However things are getting back to normal and doctors orders are to get on with my hobby as a way of helping with stress etc.

Now to get on with my HDML build which has not progressed beyond obtaining the hull in January.
