What happens to your model boat if it sinks?

Have you ever wondered what happens to all those model boats that are unfortunate enough to sink in deep water?

Well, according to this BBC video an Octopus might run off with them as a mobile home!

It would have to be a small one to fit in my Footy, while our fleet of warships would seem rather narrow for it.

Just in case…..I fit a float attached to a length of fishing line that is glued to the boat with water based glue that melts and lets the float go to the surface……then just pull the boat up with the fishing line…simple enough but it has saved a couple of my models.

yeh I know that but they’re also supposed to come back up again……this one didn’t lol

Well i suppose it could be termed a teething problem , at least 50%of the build was ok

No pictures, this was a good few years ago…I had completed a small submersible, built on the styrene mouldings from Model Boats, as designed by Bob Read.

The evening of the maiden voyage arrived and we took the boat down to a local river to test out. It had been in the water for a while, everything seemed normal and was working well…then the sub went down by the head and kept going down, never to be seen again.
I had the local sub aqua club come and do a proper underwater search for it, they covered the whole area where the boat went down and a lot more besides, bless them…but they found nothing.
A complete mystery as  to where it went and why it went down…I guess I’ll never know now.

There is a very simple solution, add one item of extra detail to the ship. A crate with a little bouy on top of it. The bouy is attched to a line which has been rolled up on a sewing machine bobin inside the crate. Should your boat go down the bouy stays on the surface and the line unwraps from the bobin. Now it is easy to know where your boat is and to retrieve it. Using the thread they use to sew car upolstery is very strong and will easily lift a boat of 10 to 15 kg with ease.

If the boat is on the small size, mount it just below the deck under the little crate. Just remember if you are goint ot use it to attempt lifting the boat from the murky depths, fix it securely.
